THE SUMPTER MINER. Wednesday, March 7, 1900 J DYNAMITE EXPLOSION. Blown 40 Feet, Skull Fractured and Is Still Alive. Willie thawing out some Riant powder last Thursday at the Sumpter Free Gold Mining Company's properties, four miles from town, an explosion occurred, Injur ing one man, several standing near by fortunately escaping. J. J. Filler, the man Injured, was struck on the head by a piece of rock and knocked forty feet down the hill. ' Me came to town unassisted and medical attention was not sought until Friday. lie acted a little queer it times Thursday, hut 1111 special attention was paid to him. Friday he fell on the street, unconscious, and Dr. Hrock was called to attend him. An exiinliiatlnii revealed that the skull had leen fractured, about nu Inch In length, and was pressing on the brain. For immediate relief, the Indentation was raised, the doctor thinking at the time that a trepanning operation would have to be performed. Consciousness was soon regained alter being relieved of the pressure on the brain, and Saturday Mr. Foler was so much heller that it was decided that the operation would not be necessary. Kciuuic Operation! at the Struburg. Next to the Red Hoy there Is perhaps no mining property in eastern Oregon that Is better known than the SlraMwrg mi Olive creek. I his property, though long ago patented, has been lying Idle for two years by reason of the fact that the principal owners have died.
