THE SUMPTER MINER.
SOME RAILROAD TALK.
Official of S. V. R; R. Makes
Promises and Predictions.
C. W. Nlbley, Manager of the Sump
ter Valley railroad, was" in Portland Sat
urday, and did a great deal of talking to
a Telegram reporter. He was evidently
talking for publication, and the effect he
hoped It would have. If he will fulfill the
following promise, Sump ter people will be
appeased to some extent. He said:
"On March 15 we shall put on a double
daily passenger train service between
Baker City and Sumpter.' The present
logging train will be continued, but will
leave Baker City late in the afternoon, so
as to carry the day's mail and the evening
papers to all the mining camps in that
district."
Then he talked about railroad building
and exlentions, declaring positively that
the Hilgard-Cranlte road will never be
built, and that the survey is a bluff by the
Grande Ronde Lumber ompany, to
protect a lot of timber lands. To the av
erage mind, this would appear to be a
poor way to "protect" such property,
making it appear valuable, at least, and
exciting the cupidity of the public but
that is neither here nor there. After an
nouncing that tins proposed railroad will
1 ml be constructed, he causually remarks:
"The Sumpter Valley Railroad Com
pany fully appreciates the importance of
the business in sight for the coming sea
son in Eastern Oregon, and vou may say
that commencing almost immediately, we
will extend our present line southerly
from Sumpter 18 miles, through Honana
and on toward Prairie City, and we may
build this season, as far as Canyon City,
If negotiations now pending in New York
are consummated."
There would appear to be some con
nection between the two statements.
Eugene People Interested in Sumpter.
The Eugene Guard publishes an inter
esting letter from William Mayer, for
merly of that place but now a resident of
Sumpter, In answer to many letters of in
quiry received from acquaintances there.
He tells of conditions here, industrial and
business, of the future bright outlook,
and incidentally suggests that now is the
time to Invest.
