one has the proverbial lead pipe cinch,
many changes would be made in the man
agement of the road, with no inconveni
ence nor loss to itself, which would prove
a vast accommodation to the public. One
is that the "logger" should run on Satur
days instead of Sundays, thereby giving
the people of Sumpter six mails a week
from the west, instead of live, as at pres
ent. This mail is brought in Sunday
evening and the postoflice is not opened
until Monday morning. Till: MINER

tion will be acted on.
IN many Eastern papers, principally
country dailies, a letter has recently been
published from the inimitable, unapproach
able pen of Colonel Donan, on the un
precedented growth of Sumpter and the
marvelous wealth of the Sumpter gold
fields. How Its publication in so many
papers, covering such a wide aera of coun
try, has been secured can only be ac
counted for by the magic of its author's
name. Every thing he writes Is eagerly
read. This letter lias doubtless been sub
mitted to the editors, who generally know
a good thing when they see it, and they
accepted the contribution to their columns
with thanks. And no piece of advertis
ing has attracted so much attention to the
district. Till: MINER, the postmaster
and private individuals are receiving doz
ens of letters daily, asking for further in
formation, and giving this letter as the
source of their first knnweledge of the ex
istence of such a town as Sumpter, sur
rounded by rich gold mines. Here is to
Colonel Uouan's good fortune the ex
tent of which he deserves he has never
realized.
