THE SUMPTER MINER.
Another Mining Paper In Portland.
Frank A. McKInzle, as business mana
ger, and Norman Ellsworth as editor, have
issued at Portland the. first number of the
Mining and "Machinery Review, dated
Februarys. The publication is what Its
name implies. It is handsomely printed
on super calendared book, containing six
teen pages and colored enameled cover.
Its leading article Is on "Sumpter, the
New Eldorado," and all through the
magazine Is much reading matter about
thl most prosperous camp in the North
west. Tlie following Is n paragraph from
the leader: "The facts already proved
places the Sumpter district beyond ques
tion as richer in precious metals than any
other section of the eartli (amount of de
velopment considered) and when we con
sider the immensllv and rapidity of the
increase In the production of the precious
metals, we cannot be surprised that the
world should be a little dazed at the stor
ies told through the press of golden bricks
worth from $10,000 to $40,000 each that
are deposited monthly in the b.inks of
Sumpter and Baker City.. The paying
mines adjacent to Sumpter warrant a
population by the summer of 1000, quad
ruple of what there is now, and every
thing points to an early increase in the
number. Muildiugs are being erected s
rapidly as sawmills can turn out the lum
ber. It is nothing to see a house or build
ing started in one day and ready almost
for occupancy the next, the sound of ham
mer and saw is heard day and night, and
with all this building, it Is difficult to se
cure a location."
