house, elegantly appointed, and their
opening Saturday night was perhaps the
largest attended alfair of the kind ever
had in Sumpler. Moth the proprietors are
Cortland men of experience, and are sure
to make a popular house of the place, to
be known hereafter as "The Cortland."
The linn of J. W. Cox & Co. opened
their doors Monday evening, in the for
mer Hed l-'rout comer, though the large
ind cost I v fitted room is not yet com
ple'rd, and the formal opening will not
take place until Saturday night of this
week. It would seem to nianv that the
new linn is actually extravignnt in its
ideas of lixlures for a place of 3000 peo
ple, and where there are some twenty
other saloons, but Atessrs. Cox & Co.
have that supreme faith hi the future that
Is shown by all Sumpter business people,
and are entitled to the credit of having as
line a bar room as can be found in the
state of Oregon when all Is completed.
No one need "go dry" in this man's town.
