for the good of that section; endeavoring
to divert the Granite trade from Sumpter,
which is an entirely legitimate undertak
ing. Hut how much more seemly and ef
fective this would be, if they should not
seek to veil their motive by trying to
make It appear to be one merely of kindly
solicitude for the already thriving camp of
Granite. But note this significant fact.
Along with all thK confident talk about
railroad building, is Intimately and intri-

freight and stage line from La Grande to
I Granite, a distance of forty-live or fifty
, miles. The people of that camp will not

stage and freight line would seem to Indi
cate that there Is a "con game" concealed
somewhere about that railroad proposition.

does, that every camp contiguous to Sump
ter that grows and prospers will be a
benefit to the entire Blue mountain min
ing region. And whatever adds to the
material prosperity of this district will be

ing mining camps, no combination of cir
cumstances and lulluences can take from
Sumpter Its pirseut supremacy in the
eastern Oregon gold lields. The topog
raphy of the country renders it neces
sary that these loads shall radiate from
this point, because the mountains make
a belt Hue Impracticable, if not impossible
of construction all ol which redounds to
the greatness and glory of this Camp.
IN the La Grande Chronicle and the
Portland Telegram last week were pub
lished articles' staling that the writer
thereof (evidently the same) knows posi
tively that the Milgard-Granite railroad
will be built this year, lie does not give
his authority, but Instead, tries to carry
conviction by means of the force and dog
matic assurance of the assertion. The
exceeding interest and labored effort of the
La Grande paper to make It appear that
this interest in Granite's welfare Is en
tirely disinterested, is somewhat amusing.
Of course, the truth is that the I .a Grande
