Wednesday, January 24, 1900. THE SUMPTER MINER. THE SILVER STAR. New Corporation to Operate Greenhorn Mines. The Silver Star group of five claims in the Greenhorn district has been secured by W. H. Lancaster, A. Ersklne Smith and Taylor Althouse, who have Incor porated the Silver Star Mining and Mill ing company, of Sumpter, Oregon. The company is officered by the three named operators, and work will begin by Febru ary 1 to develop the claims, which are said to be among the most promising of any in that district, much work having al ready been done on them, consisting of 145 feet of shaft and drifting on the vein and 300 feet of tunnel work, giving some 350 feet of depth, the conditions being par ticularly favorable for gaining in this par ticular. It is said that from 60 tons of ore taken from these workings and milled in the Monumental mill, values to the extent of $100 per ton were obtained. The company has organized with 1,000, 000 shares, 500,000 of which have been placed to the credit of the treasurer for de velopment purposes, the common stock of the promoter having been pooled for a period of six months, that it may not come in competition with the treasury shares. This is apparently a liberal proposition, showing the faith of the pro moters in the future outcome of the Silver Star properties. WHAT HURLBERT HAS DONE. Colonel Grayson Says He Ha Started a Stampede Sumptcrwacd. Colonel Grayson was in Sumpter a few days since. He has recently returned from New York and other Atlantic sea board points. He confirms the general Impression that there will be a great stam pede to the eastern Oregon gold fields dur ing the coming months, and that Sump ter will be the storm center of the result ing commercial, real estate and mining ac tivity, as it already Is. The Colonel is of the opinion that the rush will equal in magnitude the memora ble Cripple Creek excitement of a few years ago, and will continue longer, be cause there is so much greater rich min eralized area here than there. For this reason, more men will make colossal for tunes, many hundreds more will accumu late competencies and thousands more can make comfortable livings In the Sumpter district than in that Colorado gold camp. That the mining industry here will be per manent and that the gold production will increase steadily and rapidly for the next ten years he hasn't the least doubt, for it is already demonstrated that the ledges go down, growing richer with depth and that deep mining pays. He thinks this the best quartz mining district in America, and Grayson is authority on this subject. No mining regjpn on earth Is better ad vertised today than is this, and few are attracting more attention from capitalists and practical mining men. And for this desirable condition of affairs, Colonel Grayson says to W. H. Hurlbert, general passenger agent of the O. R. & N.,ls due very largely the credit. He secured the matchless service of Colonel Donan to write of the wonderful mineral resources of this section, had these literary gems handsomely printed and artistically Illus trated and placed everywhere that they would do the most good. The road and the region are already realizing on this In telligent investment of money and brains, and much the larger profits are yet to be gained.
