Gray; secretary and treasurer, Otto Herlocker; chief, M. E. Thornton, who has had six years experience In the Portland paid department; first assistant chief, F. B. Thomes, a veteran In the vol unteer department at Butte, Montana, live years of which was in the capacity of chief; second assistant chief, Frank Jewett, well known In connection with the Baker City fire department. A. A. Hammond who, for twenty years was a fireman at Ironwood, Mich., ten of which he was a chief; Tom G. Gray, for ten years secretary and active member of the Butte department, from which he holds an exempt certificate; big Al Weln rick, with six years active service In Mis soula and Butte, Montana, and many others who have had much experience In volunteer and paid departments of large cities are among the members of the Sumpter department. Chief Thornton is an enthusiast in the matter of fire fighting and proposes to have a first-class trained department In Sumpter in a short time. As superin tendent of the Electric company he has made himself popular with the public, so he can command good service when ever it Is required. Donation to Public School. The Unity Social club, at a meeting in the school house, decided to disband, sell the property, consisting of a f joo piano and a lot of dishes, the proceeds of sale to be donated to the Sumpter public schools. The piano and dishes are In the Ellis opera house and can be seen and ex amined by any one wishing to buy. The committee will receive sealed bids at Case & Looney's furniture store for all the property, or any separate part of It. The right to reject any and all bids is reserved. Bils will be received until January 23, 1900. E. A. Case, H. J. Chouse, J. B. Stoddard, Committee. Stockton a Promkiaf Property. Charles Patten, of the Atlas Lumber company, of Seattle, interested with sev eral associates in the Stockton property, near the Badger mine, was hereon his way to that camp. He says they have had twelve men at work all summer; have 400 to 450 feet of tunnel work, which has given a depth of 1 )o feet, and that his people have every reason to believe they have a mine of great promise. Diamond drills have been used with good eftect on the Stockton. Bonanza Ckan-up, $40,000. A big clean-up of gold was brought down from the Bonanza mini last even ing by F. P. Hayes, president and mana ger of the Bonanza Mining company, who left the product at the First National bank. The value of the bars was not given out, but those wlio .sa- the product estimate the amount from f 3 s, 000 to 140,000. The latter amount is probably the nearest guess at the value. Baker City Demo-, cr.it. Coal Discovered on Bald Mountain. Mr. Van Buren, ex-justlce of the peace nt La Grande, with associates, recently discovered a promising vein ot bituminous coal about ten miles from Sumpter, on the southern slope of Bald mountain. The vein is an extensive one, and tests show its value as fuel and coking coal. De velopment work is being pushed on the property, to establish more clearly the ex tent and permanence of the deposit.
