THE SUMPTER MINER.
FOR FIRE PROTECTION
Water System Tested and Fire
Department Organized.
While the Sumpter waterworks plant
has been practically complete and ready to
serve the public for the past ten days,
there were some minor defects to be reme
died, and last Friday the first test of the
system was made. A hose was attached
to the hydrant on the principal corner of
the city, opposite Till- MINKR office, and
with a i',i inch nozzle a stream was
thrown a distance of 130 feet down Mill
street and a perpendicular height of 60
feet. Afterward, with a one-Inch nozzle,
a stream was thrown 160 feet and a height
of 75 to 80 feet.
At the location mentioned the greatest
pressure, however, is not obtained, and at
a more thorough test Sunday afternoon,
from the hydrant on the railway depot
corner, the result with the ii Inch nozzle
was 160 feet and 75 to 80 feet in height;
with the one Inch nozzle, the distance
reached was 200 feet, and loo feet in
height.
To make a yet more thorough test,
Chief Thornton ordered Siamese Connec
tion on the hydrant, whereby two streams
were taken from same. The result demon
strated the capability of throwing two
one-inch streams 50 feet in height, which
would throw A'ater over any building
likely to be built in Sumpter for some time
to come.
When the alarm was sounded Sunday
afternoon It brought out the majority of
the cllieus of (lie town, among whom
were the mayor, councllmen, W. I.. Vin
son, to whom till can tender thanks for
such a water svstem, and many strangers
from larger cities, all of whom expressed
thtir satisfaction and congratulations.
The chief and other otticials of the fire
department were unanimous In stating
that the water supply and pressure are
sufficient for lighting any lire that may
occur. Together with the apparatus
which arrived Friday last, consisting of
two first class Watcrous hose reels, with
1 $00 feet of the bet cotton hose In the
market and a sufficient number of nozzles
to make the department efficient; the do
gallon chemical engine already In com
mision, It is possible to tight lire effec
tively. The hose houses, one of which Is lo
cated on the hill near the school building,
the other at the city hall, will he com
pleted at once. The city council is ne
gotiating now with the Portland Fire de
partment for the purchase of one of its
village trucks, which will be a valuable
addition.
The officers of the new lire organiza
tion, elected at the last Thursday night
