THE SUMPTER MINER.
-f
THE NEW ELDORADO.
Sumpter Has More Dividend
I Payers Than Three States.
General C. S. Warren is In the city
visiting friends and interesting Canadian
capital in the new Eldorado. He says:
''There are but two new stars In the heav
ens In the mining world that are now all
brilliant, Sumpter and Cape Nome. Cape
Nome will do for the young men and ad
venturous spirits. Cape Nome is now
closed to the outside world and will remain
so until next June. Sumpter is always
open, is at the end of a railroad, and is
the center of a mining district, so far as
has been explor:d, second to none upon
earth. Within 20 miles of Sumpter are
more dividend-payers than In the states of
Montana, Washington and Idaho com
bined. When I left there, less than is
days ago, there were 22 cars of mining
machinery standing on the sidetrack
awaiting shipment to the different mines
In the vicinity of Sumpter. There are
now 12 quartz mills running, it in process
of construction and Mr. Unzlcker, the gen
eral agent of Fraser & Chalmers, of Chi
cago, has 41 applications for mills, cya
nide plants and hoisting works. Prosper
ity seems to be In the air. Over 500 of
the best of the Butte miners are now In
the district. The many sales that have
been made in the past three months, the
marvelous growth of the town, which is
, up to date, with its waterworks, the equal
of any In America, two banks, both in
two-story brick structures, 30x100 each, a
hotel for which a contract has been let,
which Is to be of three stories and made
nf brick, a townsite unsurpassed for
natural beauty, the distributing and min
ing center of what may properly be des
ignated as the Rand of America, a town
insignificant, forgotten and overlooked 12
months ago, makes it the Mecca and the
bonanza land for 1900 for practical miners
all over the continent. Every afternoon
about 130 there is drawn up In front of
. Mr. Thomas McEwen's stage office from
six to ten coaches headed for the surround
ing mining camps. Hank Monk, jr., gets
his orders, and, when lie starts off and
turns on one wheel It reminds us of the
early days when the $20 gold pieces went
over the bar and no change was returned.
In a word, the Sumpter district of Oregon
is such a mining district as has not been
developed in the United States for the
past 20 years.
"Several citizens of Rossland have In
vested In the Sumpter section and can
now sell out at a profit of 500 per cent.
"Of course the success of all mining
camps depends upon the value of Its
mines. It does not take even a laymen
long to be In Sumpter, and see the gold
bricks chucked off the coaches and on the
sidewalks, to become convinced that he is
In a gold producing country. The mining
money Is now trending that way. The
stories of Bret Harte and John Hay are
being re-enacted everyday. We have
there John Oakhurst, the outcast of
Poker Flat, and Tennessee's partner, and
all the rest, two generations after the
originals were active. Virginia City In
its palmy days, Treasure Hill, after cross
ing the desert, Pioche, Cripple Creek and
the Rand are now altogether mingled in
one, the Sumpter district of Oregon.
"Baker City is not a rival of Sumpter.
It is, however, to Sumpter what L'enver
Is to Cripple Creek, what Salt Lake is to
Pioche; what Carson Is to Virginia City;
what Johannesburg is to the Rand. There
seems to be a mistaken idea on the out
side as to the relationship that exists be
tween the two places, Baker and Sump
ter. Baker City Is the county seat of
Baker county and Sumpter Is the best
patron, the best friend, the best rival that
Baker City has In eastern Oregon. The
success of one means the success of both.
"Tens of thousands of dollars of Brit
ish and Canadian capital has been In
vested In Sumpter. Something that has
never been known before in a town of this
size is that a failure has not been yet re
corded there. Governor Mackintosh has
many thousands of dollars Invested there
and all of his properties are on a dividend
paying basis."
General Warren leaves for Sumpter to
morrow. He is one of the men who Is
warmly welcomed whenever he comes to
Rossland. Rossland Miner.
