THE SUMPTER MINER.
SUMPTER TELEPHONES
Management Promises Exten
sive Improvements.
G. B. Rush, assistant superintendent of
the Inland Telephone company, With head-'
quarters at Portland, was in Sumpter last
week looking after the interests of his
company here. He says the business of
the line from Sumpter has been so
heavy during the past few months, grow
ing every day, that It has been impossi
ble to handle it, but he promises soon to
increase the facilities to such an extent
that an adequate service will be afforded nil
patrons.
A night operator has already been put
oi), in addition to the two day operators
and the telegraph operator, tie says an
additional pair of wires will soon be
strung between here and Baker City. No
additional telegraph service will be fur
nished for the present.
As soon as the Basche block Is ready
for occupancy, the telephone office will be
moved to the two front rooms, where a
convenient conversation room and sound
proof booths will be provided.
At present there nVe ninety-eight sub
scribers to the, Sumpter exchange, but a
solicitor will-be put to work at an early
day and the company hopes to run this up
to 150 bv March i.
Booming the White Swan in Iowa.
The DesMoines, Iowa; Mining News
far December is devoted largely to the
Vyhite Swan mine, located the other side
of Baker City. There are pages of read
ing matter about the property, yet the
whole truth is not told. There are sev
eral display advertisements, relative to
the sale of stock and promised dividends
ai an early day, from which an Inference
can be drawn. There are illustrations,
not made from photographs, the sketches
fr which were either made by one not
conversant with the situation, or else for
the purjose to deceive. The White Swan
is not contiguous to the Bonanza, not by
forty or fifty miles. It is generally be
lieved that there is rich ore in the White
Swan, but it is in. "swell" ground, .the
workings have caved in.
Sumpter a Paradi Picnic Ground.
A Portland man lately returned from
Sumpter says that although the know is
two feet deep there, more than too build
ings are going up, and everybody is busy,
caring nothing for a little inconvenience
like two feet of snow. Sumpter is a sum
mer paradise picnic ground in comparison
with Dawson or Nome City. Portland
