THE SUMPTER MINER.
tf
DEMOCRATIC CLUB.
Organized Under the Name of
the Party's Patron Saint.
Pursuant to a call published In THE
MINER two weeks since, about fifty dem
ocrats met in Ellis opera house Friday
evening and took preliminary steps to or
ganize under the name of Jeffersonian
Democratic club.
Mayor W. H. Gleason was chosen tem
porary chairman and E. L. Manning tem
porary secretary. Permanent officers
elected were: J. H. Robblns, president;
A. W. Ellis, vice president; P. D. Healey,
secretary, and W. H. Gleason, treasurer.
A committee consisting of H. C. Mc
Colloch, Al Jones, John Rlggs, William
O'Donnell and F. A. E. Starr, was ap
pointed to draft a constitution and by
laws for the club and submit same for ap
proval at the next meeting, Xhi evening of
the twelfth instant, at which time perma
nent organization will be effected. Then,
too, considerable spell binding will be at
tempted by local orators, Attorney Starr
being billed for the astral attraction of the
first magnitude, delivering the "dedica
tion" speech.
Those who took part and interest In the
meeting say they are organizing for keeps,
and that they are going to give somebody
a run for their money.
And They Come From the Sound Ako.
Hon. J. G. Fritz and A. O'Kelley, of
Everett, Washington, the first named
formerly a prominent politician, but for a
couple of years a successful operator in
Alaska mines; the latter a member of the
firm of Lane & O'Kelley, the most ex
tensive fuel and pulp wood contractors on
the Sound, reached Sumpter last week.
They are looking for Investments, real es
tate and mining, and a business opening,
If sufficiently enticing. During the few
hours speat In Raker City, they listened
to the organized band of knockers, who
do not love Granite more, but Sumpter
less, and proceeJed to that thriving camp,
and will size-up the country generally be
fore deciding what to do. They returned
to Sumpter several days since, have in
vestigated the situation here and decided
that this is the place they are looking for.
Sudden Death of a Child.
The eight-year-old son of Mr. Miner
died here very suddenly about 9 o'clock
Sunday morning. During the previous
afternoon he complained that his knee
was hurting him, but there is thought to
have been no connection between this and
his death. At three o'clock in the morn
ing he awoke his parents and called for a
drink of water. When tht family arose
Sunday morning the boy was found to be
quite sick and Dr. Pearce was called.
Before he reached the house the child was
dead. He is of the opinion that he died
of heart disease. There Is no truth In the
report circulated on the streets that It was
a case of diphtheria. Dr. Pearce says
there was not the slightest symptoms of
that disease.
Fin Liquor the Drawing Card.
C. L. Mellqulst, of La Grande, Ore
gon, has opened what will be known as
the Mint saloon, corner of Center and
Sumpter streets, the building formerly oc
cupied by William Mayer & Co. as a gro
cery. A first class resort with the best
liquors that money will buy is the plan
on which this house is to be conducted.
