THE SUMPTER MINER. FOR PARIS EXPOSITION LINES OF THE Sumpter Stage Transfer Co. CARRYING U. S. MAILS. A BEAUTIFUL LINE OF FASCINATORS Government Agent Here to Collect Ores for Exhibit. Wednesday, December 27 , 1899 m ZL Joseph S. Woodruff, a well known and extensive mining operator from Chicago, reached Sumpter Saturday. The purpose of Mr. Woodruff 's trip west at this time is to look after his mining interests in western Oregon. He is one of the princi pal owners of the Bohemia, In the Cas cades. Learning of his proposed trip, Freder ick J. V. Skiff, director of the depart ment of mining and metallurgy for the Paris exposition, commissioned him to make a coliection of Oregon ores for ex hibition at that great world's fair. And that is the direct cause for his visit to Sumpter. He saw P. R. Mellis, com missioner from this state to the Paris show, for only a few moments while in Baker City, en route to Sumpter, and therefore reached no definite understand ing with him relative to the matter. While in Portland he will call on General Passenger Agent Hurlbert, of the O. R. & N., to secure his co-operation. Oregon will doubtless have its own separate mineral exhibit at Paris, and in this case Mr. Woodruff 's mission will merely be to urge the Importance of mak ing a comprehensive and creditable dis play. The return to the owners of any ores entrusted to his care is insured by a government bond. He saw and was favorably impressed with the exhibit from the Sumpter district at the Spokane fair, and on account of the information there acquired, came direct here to prosecute his work, knowing that the richest ores old mother earth ever yielded are found in the Blue mountains surrounding this camp. Mr. Woodruff says that the fane of the Sumpter district has reached Chicago, and mining men are so much interested that several will come out in the spring looking for investments. He himself hopes to become interested sooner or later. Col Topalag , Ukt AI Otktn, k PkaaaL Colonel Topping, of Trail, is. This time it is the big Van Anda group welch has changed hands, at least a three-fifths interest in the property is taken up by Colonel Topping with other British Co lumbia capitalists, fee price paid beiag, it b said, $1,500,000.
