THE SUMPTER MINER. MASKS AND FACES. Desks and office furniture at Case, Looney Co., Incorporated, opera house block. Red Men's Masquerade Ball a Huge Success. Wednesday, December 27, 1899 fef There were queens and kings and vari ous other kinds of pluguglies at Bills hall Monday night. Forty-four couples en masque turned out to add to the brill iancy and beauty of the Red Men's masquerade ball. Also the hall was suf focatingly crowded with "rubbernecks." It was certainly the largest gathering ever known In Sumpter. From both an artistic and social stand point the affair was a success. In the matter of costumes there was the usual variety of quite beautiful ones, and an un usual percentage of "comical" ones. Miss Massom, personifying a blushing bride gowned in white, was awarded first prize for the handsomest ladies' character. Miss Toney, representing Pocahontas, was ad judged the second, best. Two comical Chinamen, Messrs. Fisk and Lenville, were reckoned the best sustained char acters. A. G. Davidson, uniformed as a lieutenant of artillery, was awarded the tirst gentleman's prize because he was thought by the Judges to be Agulnaldo. PARMENTIER'S PREDICTIONS. Says the Granite District Will Be Heard From In Future Peter Parmentier, the well known min ing man, has returned to Pendleton for the winter, according to his custom. For years he has been Interested In mines in the Granite district, and at the present time has much of interest to talk about. He spoke of the wonderful boom enjoyed by Sumpter during the past six months, and says that the Granite district will be the next In the state to be brought to the attention of outsiders, which will result i.i its being boomed, with a solid basis, similar to the excitement at Rossland, R. C., some time ago, Republic In '98 and 'w, and the more recent and present Sumpter case. Mr. Parmentier owns property four miles north of Granite, having recently purchased the interest of his partners therein. Those were: J. R. Dickson, Conrad Kohler, David Home, Thomas Rourke, Dan Pinson, John Hughes, Mr. Reilly and Mr. Martin. This mining property is on the Magnolia lode, but one claim being between the Magnolia and the claim of Mr. Parmentier. It is also supposed to be the same ledge as that of the Couger property, the owners of hich during the past summer have put up a 250-ton cyanide process plant. The mag nolia is owned by English capital and is being developed rapidly. Mr. Parmentier is sanguine that the wealth to be produced from the mines In the vicinity of Granite will be something enormous during the next few years.
