THE SUMPTER MINER. Wednesday, December 6, 1.899 10 TALK OF THE TOWN. Al Gelser is In town today. A. M. Keltic returned Monday from a business trip to Shokane. Plats of the Vinson addition to Sump ter were filed at the county seat Monday. Six four-horse wagons loaded with steel rails for the Ibex mine left Sumpter Mon day. General Warren expects to leave Satur day for a flying business trip to Butte, Montana. J. H. Robblns, president of the First Hank of Sumpter, spent Sunday In Pen dleton. W. I.. Vinson left Sunday evening for Portland, going to Maker City on a spe cial train. J. H. Huntington, known In Umatilla county as the "Cow Hoy" lawyer, Is In Sumpter with the intention of settling here to practice law. The team, wagon and battery for the Golcouda mill broke through a bridge while en route to the mine several days since, the whole outfit falling In the creek. . .... Ml . C... .1-. Cn.lll. ,,u"1 ""l ou,CII.J., Manager Stoddard, of the Sumpter Lum ber company, hopes to have the mill run ning today, soon after which he will be In position to supply the more urgent of the earlier orders. He has had some diffi culty in securing logs, along with his other troubles, owing to the bad condition of the roads. Captain J. R. Woods, of Chicago, rep resenting the great Tanner syndicate, ar rived In Sumpter yesterday. He figured conspicuously in the Buffalo Hump coun try last spring and summer. His mission here Is to secure one or more of the Sump ter district bonanzas. He Is one of the most famous mining experts on the conti nent. James Howard, a prominent real estate man from Pendleton, William Robblns, a mining man from Spokane, arrived In Sumpter last evening and, in company with J. H. Robblns, of this city, Went out to Granite today, to examine some min ing propertv. These three men have re cently Incorporated the Concord Gold Milling company. Looking for a Butlncw Location. Geoige H. Walker, a recent arrival mid E. J. He Is now in the Cure of friends In Portland. C. H. Armstrong, of Spokane, repre senting a first class Chicago tailoring firm. Is In Sumpter with a line Hue of samples, from which can be ordered suits or single garments at eastern prices and made up in eastern style. Colonel 1:. S. Topping, of Trail, Brit ish Columbia, who has bought and will develop the Blue Bird, has been In the hills for several days past, examining other properties. He will return to Sump ter tomorrow. C. E. Halght, of Gleudive, Mont., has recently come to Sumpter and will make this his home, expecting to brirg his fam ily here at an early date. The local papers of Gleudive speak highly of Mr. Halght and express their regrets at losing so val uable a citizen. Postmaster K.ihler has been confined to his home for several days with threatened typhoid fever, though his physician, Dr. Pearce, thinks he has the fever broken -Mid that Mr. Kaliler will be out and at tending to his duties In the postoltice In a tew days. I . W. and R. 1.. Davidson, father and sou, of Bay City, Michigan, arrived In Sumpter yesterday. 'I he elder Mr. David son spent some time here last summer, leaving for home about two months since. While here he bought the Bald Mountain mine troin R. Haywood, detailed mention of which was made In TtlH MlNliH at the time. On his way out here he stopped over at Denver, where Mr. Mr. Haywood resides, and paid 5000 on the deal. spent several days at Granite, returning yesterday. They report that camp as very lively; say that town lots have al ready begun to climb up towards the ceil ing and that residents have the utmost confidence in the future growth and per manent prosperity of the place. Already Inside lots are quoted at 1 500. Mr. Walker is looking for an opening for some mer cantile business and will probably settle In Sumpter. Will Spend the Winter in California. H. J. Watson, who has been in the Cracker Creek and Cable Cove districts all summer, came down Monday on his way home to San Francisco, where he will remain through the winter, having completed the work on several mineral claims bought or located for him self and California parties, In whose In terest he came here. Mr. Watson was formerly a newspaper man of the old school, and his recent contribution to this paper has been read by thousands mid reprinted in several other papers. Sale of the Gem Saloon. The Gem saloon, formerly owned by Snyde & Stlnson, has been bought by Andrew J. Stlnson, he having acquired Clark Snyde's interest. Mr. Stlnson has remodeled the Interior of the place, re papereJ and painted and so changed the general appearance of everything that th many patrons will scarcely recognize it as the old Gem, although that name will be retained by the new management.
