The annual city election will be held next Tuesday, when three alderman, a recorder and a marshal will be chosen. Mayor Gleason and Aldermen Parkinson, Hllller and Austin hold over. The three aldermen whose term Is ex Plrlnc, William Stlnson, A. W. Hills and W. W. Looney, are candidates for re election and have gone through! the legal process of liling petitions for nomination. At the present writing, Tuesday, they are the only candldares who have appeared, though petitions can be legally tiled as Lite as l:riday. Those familiar with local politics say that neither of these gentle men will meet with opposition; that they have made excellent councllmen and as they arc willing to serve again, the town is in luck and should give them a compli mentary send off, In the shape of a heavy vote. I here are three candidates in the field lor marshal, George Maker, the present incumbent, John Austin, one of the hold over aldermen, and Al Wenrlck, who until recently was on the night patrol as a special. l;or rec.rder K. I.. Manning and W.W. Tellx are the candidates; Sam Stott refus ing to run for re-election. One year ago i)f votes were cast at the municipal election. There will be a larger number cast next week, but noth ing like a proportionate Increase with the population, as very much the larger per centage of new comers have not yet es tablished a legal residence here. Murray, the nssayer, has been showing around town this week a won derfully rich.samplc of free milling gold rock. The specimen Is as large as one s hand, is of white quart and is literally lull of coarse gold. He says he bought It from a prospector, who claimed to have found it about twenty miles west of this camp; refusing 10 give the exact locality. Men who have mined In this district for years doubt that it was found here. They say that though some similar rock has been taken from pockets In the vicinity of Susauville, this specimen shows the marks of a drill which is larger than any Used In this section. I he Union-Cornucopia, Last Chance, Red Jacket and sister claims, comprising I what is known as the Cornucopia Mines' of Oregon, and generally called the Searles mines, are under bond to a Mon treal syndicate. 1 he exact price is not I known but Is admitted to be near $750, 000.
