iS-f Wednesday, November 29, 1899 THE SUMPTER MINER. SALE OF ALAMO GROUP J. G. McGuigan, Spokane Min ing Man, the Purchaser. J. G. McGuigan, the Spokane mining man, who only a few days ago secured by purchase the lue Jacket mines, near the Ibex, has again demonstrated his faith in the resources of this district by a further purchase of the Alamo group, which Is made up of the Alamo, Juneau and Gold Queen claims, located about one and one half miles south of the Red Boy mine, on the divide between Olive and Clear creeks, adjoining the Stratsburg mine, owned and patented by Portland parties, and the Van Andn mine, purchased last spring by Blewett & Co. The Alamo claim has a 2o-foot vein ot ore, said to average four dollars in value, without considering one i8-lnch streak on the foot wall, which runs over seventeen dollars. The Juneau has a four foot vein which will average ten dollars and is of n pure white quartz. The Gold Queen claim, a parallel vein to the Juneau, has a ledge of about twenty-live feet, from which there have been no assays made; but rock prospected from croppings show a probable value of five or six dollars. The vein can be traced for the entire length of the claim. No large amount of development work has yet been done on these properties, but by intelligent mining men have been pro nounced one of the best prospects In the country. It is the intention of the new owner to stock the property and he will soon offer a limited number of shares to the public. The name of the new company will prob ably be the Alamo Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling company. Mr. Mc Guigan will remain in this district all winter, after his return from Spokane within ten days. Meantime Andrew J. Murphy and M. R. Mahoney, from whom he bought the propel ty, will begin work with a force of miners at once and push the development all winter. Several of the free gold bearing speci mens were seen at Folsom's cigar store and would certainly carry out the suppo sition that Mr. McGuigan has secured some valuable property. Burns and Harney County Prosperous. T. B. Lepley,a skillful stone mason, returned to this city yesterday from Burns, Harney county, where he has had scarcely an idle day for the past five months in working at his trade. There has been a great deal of substantial build ing done in Burns the past year and next year there will be a greater amount of work In that line," said Mr. Lepley last evening in conversation with a reporter. If you go from Burns In almost any direc tion for an hundred miles or more, you will be traveling In one of the greatest stock raising sections in the United States. There are tens upon tens of thousands of horses, cattle and sheep, and the high prices for stock has boomed everything else In a healthy manner, burns has now upwards of 1500 population and Mr. Lepley predicts that whenever the first work is done looking to the building of a railroad through that reglon, the town will advance by bounds and will undoubtedly become one of the most important stock raisers in the west. Bnker City Demo crat. Sompttr Surprises all Visitors. Speaking of a trip by private convey ance through eastern and southern Ore gon, Colonel R. W. Mitchell 'Is thus quoted in the Grant County News: "We passed through the beautiful Blue moun tain country, near Dixie butte, and along the upper valley of the middle fork of the John Day river, and, on reaching Sump ter, I found that the town had doubled its population since I was there last, one year ago. It now has a population of 1100, and forty buildings are in course of construction. Great activity prevails in mining and the building of a city, and carpenters and masons are in demand. There was a bank established four months ago, and now another is putting up a building." So far as Sumpter Is concerned, this Is drawing it very mildly, indeed. The town has quadrupled Its population In half a year, and lias now reached the 2000 mark. Inquiries Regarding Our Gold Mines. Under n Portland date line of the twenty-third instant, a press dispatch says: Large numbers of letters are being re ceived dally by the chamber of commerce from all over the country, inquiring about the mines of eastern Oregon. The rail roads report that many carloads of min ing machinery are being unloaded in the eastern Oregon mining districts and many more shipments are on the way there. The railroad men say that from information already received the rush of men and money into the mines of eastern Oregon next spring will reach enormous proportions. Pretty Good Endorsement for $600. The matter of raising the much needed ffioo for school purposes, which was laid before the Sumpter club a couple of weeks since, with no satisfactory result, has been taken up by citizens and a joint note signed, when last seen by THE MINER, by W. V. Looney, Thomas Mc Ewen and A. J.Stlnson, members of the school board, P. J Jackson, N. C. Rich ards, A. W. Ellis, W. C. Calder, J. N. Doan, Ike Williamson, J. J. Fisher, C. S. Van Duyn, A. P.
