Wednesday, November 29, 1899 THE SUMPTER MINER. s BANK OF SUMPTER. Will Open Its Doors for Bus iness December J. The Bank of Sumpter, A. P. Goss, president; A. J. Goss, cashier, will open Its doors and books for general business December i, In its splendid new quarters 011 Mill street. The first floor of the building is completed to the extent, that it can be comfortably occupied by that time. The fire proof vault of the bank, In which Is one of the best makes of burg lar proof safes, has been thoroughly dried out by means of artificial heat, so that it can be used for books, papers and such articles of value as are generally kept In such places without Injury from damp ness. The furniture and fixtures have arrived and are of hard wood and handsome de sign. They are now being unpacked and placed In position. The second story, containing eight rooms, Is being rapidly finished and will be ready for occupancy in a few days. This is Sumpter's first completed brick building, and as such, will always stand as a monument to the enterprise of the owner. Public Lands in ThU District. A statistical statement prepared by the land office at La Grande shows that the area of reserved land in this district Is 151,360 acres and that in Umatilla county. The total area of appropriated land In the district Is 2,987,765 acres, of which 705, 863 acres belongs to Union county. The area of land surface of the counties in the land district Is 8,843,oooacres, the area of Union county being 2,028,000 acres. The character of the unappropriated and un surveyed land of Union county Is 75 per cent timbered mountains, 15 per cent graz ing and 10 per cent farming. Of Raker county 60 per cent timbered land, 5 per cent arid, 2 per cent grazing and 10 per cent farming. Of Grant county 50 per cent timbered mountains, 35 per cent grazing and 15 per cent farming. Of Morrow county 25 per cent timbered mountains, 40 per cent grazing, 25 per cent arid and 10 percent farming. Of Umatilla county 35 per cent timbered mountains, 35 per cent arid, 2s per cent grazing and per cent farming. Of Wallowa couutv 6, per cent timbered mountains; 30 per grazing and $ per cent farming. Grant county takes the lead with 1,000,000 acres of surveyed land, and the total number of acres of surveyed land in all the counties In this land dis trict, viz: Baker, Grant, Morrow, Uma tilla, Union and Wallowa, is 4,452,411, and the number of acres of unsurveyed land in the district is 1,251,400. La Grande Chronicle. Wood and Charcoal Wanted. From the call for bids published else where In THE MINER today, it will be seen that the people who propose putting in a smelter here, have doubled the amount of charcoal and cord wood for which they wish bids tendered, imv call ing for 36,000 bushels of charcoal and 500 cords of wood, to be furnished In four lots, the first to be delivered January 1, 1000. Thanksgiving Dinner Tomorrow. The ladles of the Methodist church will give a grand Thanksgiving turkey dinner tomorrow, from 11:30 a. m. to 2 p. m., in the new building next to the Nelll Mer cantile company's store. The proceeds will be for the benefit of the church.
