IO THE SUMPTER MINER. Wednesday, November 29, 1899 TALK OF THE TOWN. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Ellis are up to the mine this week. Attorney Sheltou has been to La Grande for several days on legal business. B P. Chandler, of the Grant County News, passed through Sumpter Friday with his bride. J. P. McCoy, a contractor of La Grande, Is a new comer to this field to en gage in his business. Three new restaurants are about to be opened at the present writing, and the re turns are not yet all In. R. L. Graves, assayer at the Cougar mine, came down to this metropolis yes terday on a short business trip. Mr. and Mrs. Van Duyn are moving from the hotel building to their new resi dence, just completed on Columbia street. W. M. Sterling, of Huntington, will en gage In the commission business here, and erect a warehhuse o by 120 feet for that purpose. Prank Hauer, of Spokane, has opened a boarding house and restaurant on Cen ter street, in the building just vacated by Madame Hrltten. George Stoddard, of Maker City, brother of J. B. Stoddard, of Sumpter, has been elected manager of the Oregon Sugar company, of La Jrande. P L. Nlckcrson, foreman of the work on the (tank of Sumpter building, was tailed to his home in San Jose, California, Monday, by the sudden death of his wife. Daniel Wright, of Chicago, is visiting his Irlcud, P.ugene Sperry. If Mr.Sperry has his way In the matter, Mr. Wright will be a mine owner before he leaves Sumpter. John Cupid, one of the district pioneers, Is proud of the fact that the Hag pole 011 the school house, from which floated the Hag at half mast Saturday, was cut by himself. The youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Johns is now recovering from an Ill ness that was thought for several days would be fatal. Or. Pearce has been the attending physician. The Ladles' Aid society, of Sumpter, has been engaged by the Woodmen ot the World to prepare and furnish the Thanksgiving supper to be given in con nexion with the ball. Mrs. Whitney, of Maker City, sister of Mrs. G. It. Tedrowe, returned home Fri day from a visit to Canyon City, where she recently went to attend the wedding of her son, J. L. Huffman. What Is said to be a red-hot football contest between Maker City high school' and Pendleton high school teams will be pulled olf at Maker tomorrow. Quite a delegation will attend from Sumpter. Ihomas Morrow, a Huttc, Montana, general contractor, Is here looking over the field with a view to engaging in some business. He has recently finished a 1 large paving contract in the Montana city. Werner, an attorney from Spokane, has come to Sumpter to remain and practice his profession. He has se cured offices at the corner of Mill and Sumpter streets, with Seymour Mell and his associates. Jackson & Gove, both of Spokane, have opened an up-to-date smokers' re sort two doors east of the Star hotel, where all the leading brands of cigars and tobacco can be had, and gentlemen can while away their leisure time in warm and comfortable rooms intended for their use. Cobban, Casey, Day & Co., ot Butte, Montana, will establish themselves in the real estate business here, having, secured offices on the ground floor in the front of the former Van Duyn hotel building, from Bellinger & Ritchie, the lessees, who are moving into their new quarters. IN AND AROUND SUMPTER. District Surely Destined Soon to Become Famous. J. U. Bethell returned last evening from a trip to Granite, Oregon, where he went to look at placer property. He is enthused about the mining prospects of that region. There is a genuine boom on, he says. Sumpter is crowded with people and buildings are going up on every hand. The mines are employing a great number of men and business in all lines Is exceedingly lively. The eight great paying mines lie In a circle about the town of Sumpter. And all the Intervening country Is being prospected. In Granite it Is almost impossible to se cure hotel accommodations. The hotel is crowded to such an extent that a traveler is fortunate If he is able to get a bed with out questioned as to being put in a room with some one else. Mr. bethel) states that, from all he could learn, the country Is upside down there. The mines are low grade and re fractory on top, but as depth is gained they change Into free milling properties and the grade of the ore rapidly increases. He believes that district Is going to be one of the most famous In the world. Idaho Statesman. O. G. Labarcc Buys More Mines. "I have just returned from Baker City and Sumpter, Oregon, where I have been for a week," said O. G. Labaree yester day. "While there I purchased the Don Juan mine, situated in the Sumpter district, near the Bonanza. This mine has about 500 feet of development work1, and is fully equipped with machinery, In cluding a new io-stamp mill. The prop erty has produced, up to date, about Wo, 000. I also purchased a one-fifth interest in the Keystone and Hell properties, which are the direct extensions of the Bonanza." Spokesman-Review.
