TALK OF THE TOWN.
Captain C. H. Thompson returned
from Spokane this week.
W. S. Bowers; of Baker City, was
among the visitors In Sumpter this week.
Subscribers to the Seattle Times can
Ket their papers by calling at Folsom's
news stand.
R. R. Erwln returned from Portland
Friday. He is at the mine near Susan
vllle this week.
Dr. E. M. Anderson, a new arrival
from Portland, Is here with the Intention
of locating permanently.
Cecil Hoseason has opened a well ap
pointed fish and poultry market on Cen
ter street, opposite McEwen's barn.
E. A. Smith, who left here some days
since to expert a mine In southern Oregon,
Is reported to be at the point of death In
Portland.
Monday's business at the postolfice was
the largest In the history of that ottice,
being IJ.7). A number of boxes are
being put in and the quarters enlarged.
Dr. J. B. Pilkiugton, a former resident
of Portland, cnnc up Tuesday evening
and states his Intention of locating here
to practice his profession.
T. Culbcrtson received a few days
since the sad Intelligence of the death at
Portland of his daughter, lib. only child,
his son having died suddenly several
weeks since.
Funk A. li. Starr, a shining light of
the Portland legal fraternity, was here
Wednesday and will return to open an
oilier as soon as Jie can make the trip
to Portland and back.
City Engineer II. K. Wheeler has an
other new honor to wear, having been ap
pointed deputy United States mineral
surveyor for Oregon, he having already
tilled the position for Washington and
Idaho.
Mcnno Unikkcr, the western repre
sentative of Frastr Hi Chalmers, the
Chicago mining machinery house, has
been In Sumpter and the tributary mining
camp In the Interest of his company for
nearly a week past.
E. C. Steffen went to Baker Wednes
day of last week, returning a day later
with Mrs. Steffen, who had been visiting
Ihere for a week. Mrs. Steffen partici
pated In the lady minstrel performance
given by Baker City local talent.
" A. M. Kdtle has sold his lease of the
building now being erected by J. G. Con
ned next to the First Bank of Sumpter,to
Ed Gove, who will occupy It as a cigar
and tobacco store. Mr. Keltic will accept
a responsible position with W. C. Calder.
I. B. Hammond, of Portland, who Is
manufacturing the big dredge for W. I..
Vinson, H. S. Stebbius, of Seattle, gen
eral coast agent of the Erie Dispatch
railway, and ex-Governor Black, of
Utah, now a resident of Spokane, are in ;
Sumpter, the guests of W. I.. Vinson. I
Wm. Mayer & Co., formerly of Eu
gene, Oregon, have opened a new cash
market on the corner Sumpter and Center
streets.
Sam White, district attorney for the
Eigth district of Oregon, with office at
Baker City, was here on business Friday
and Saturday. Comparining this city
with what it was in August last, he says:
"This beats any place I ever saw for
rapid and healthy growth." Qf course

two weeks since, In which I stated that I
would not be responsible for my wife's
debts, was ordered in the first place under
a misapprehension. It was ordered not
to be published the next day, but owing
to negligence of the Telephone company,
the message was not delivered for over
forty-eight hours after being filed, after
the paper was in the postolfice. My dom
estic affairs are entirely satisfactory to me
and If certain busybodies will refrain
from Interfering with matters In which
they have no concern, they will remain
