DIADEM DEVELOPMENT
Sold to Montana Miner Who
Will Work It.
The Diadem property, consisting of
that claim and the adjoining one, located
on Greenhorn mountain about half a mile
north of the Banzette mine and some
twenty-three miles southwest of Sump
ter, was last week purchased by J. K.
Pardee, a prominent Phillpsburg, Mon
tana, mining operator, who has been In
this district for the past two weeks.
The property had two shafts of seventy-five
feet and sixteen feet respectively,
when acquired. The immediate develop
ment work will include the further sink
ing on the i6-foot shaft to the ioo-foot
level, which work will be done by con
tract, bids for which are being received at
this time.
From three assays which Mr. Pardee
had made by a local assayer, on ore taken
from the i6-foot shaft, the results showed
5351.26, J210.20 and S269.10, the latter
assay carrying fifty-six per cent lead in
addition to the value given in gold and
sliver.
The work to be done will be directly on
the ore vein and the character of the ore
Is such as will permit of rapid sinking,
consequently, with what has been shown
in the way of values from the slight
depth attained, some wonderful results
may be expected with greater depth.
The ore Is base and of a shipping qual
ity, carrying about one-third free gold.
A run of a large quantity of it through a
mill near by the property gave a showing
of three ounces of gold, with concentrates
of over $300 to the ton.
A corporation to operate this property Is
being formed under the laws of Oregon,
and about which more will be said at an
early date. The general offices of the
company will be a fixture of Sumpter.
The second payment on these mines
was made Monday.
Narrow Escape From Death.
C. J. Stephens, one of the many em
ployes of V. L. Vinson, fell from a wa
gon Saturday directly under the heels of
the wheel horses, which resulted in Ills
being severely kicked In the head and
face before he could be taken from his
perilous position by those around
him. When picked up he was thought to
have been killed, being in an unconscious
state. He was taken as hurriedly as pos
sible to the office of Dr. C. M. Pearce,
where his wounds were skillfully dressed
and everything done to make him as com
fortable as possible before being removed
to the Capital hotel, where he now is and
reported to be doing well and will recover
if no new complications set in. This
case demonstrates the urgent need of a
hospital, which the good ladies of Sump
ter are trying to have established here,
and the need of which becomes more ap
parent every day.
Work on Smelter to Begin Soon.
A letter was received from the St. Louis
Smelter manufacturers Saturday by par
ties interested in the smelter to be built
here, saying the plant would reach here
in six weeks from date of writing, and
that in two weeks thereafter the smelter
would be up and ready for operation.
The builders are now advertising for
charcoal and cordwood for early delivery
and their representative will be here in a
few days from St. Louis to begin neces
sary work on the proposition.

Mr. Dugan, formerly mayor of Butte,
Montana, who has been in Sumpter a
.veek or ten days, has decided to remain
nere and has rented the office on the
ground floor of the Healy block, until re
cently occupied by Brock & Herlocker.
E. J. Dwyer, the real estate and mining
operator, whose arrival was mentioned in
THE MINER last week, has also con
cluded to stay in Sampter. He has formed
a partnership with H. H. Fritz, an ac
quaintance of his at Republic, and they
will have desk room with Mr. Durgau,
engaging In a general brockerage busi
ness. This juxtaposition of Montana
and Washington rustlers will result In
some huge unexpected deal at no distant
day.
