Wednesday, November 22, 1899 THE SUMPTER MINER. SUMPTER HOSPITAL. Ladies Have Raised Nearly $1000 for The Enterprise. The Protestant hospital for Snmpter is now assured, since the ladies who actively had this noble cause in hand re port most liberal subscriptions from nearly every one they have approached, th list of which will be published when they have more completely canvassed the terri tory Intended. At this time, however, they have J926 guaranteed. The site will be immediately selected and the building commenced as soon as lumber can be secured. Mrs. Jacobs and Mrs. Creighton, two ladies of the Portland White Cross so ciety visiting here, have agreed to furnish completely, a private room, and also to pay the fare of a nurse from Portland; the only condition being that the nurse may wear the badge of their society In the hospital. Three other parties have also agreed to furnish private rooms to be used by such patients as can afford quar ters separate from the wards. Space this week forbids as extended a notice as it deserves, but mention must be made of the very successful ball given Friday evening, the proceeds of which added Suo to the hospital fund. The Ellis hall was tastily decorated, re freshments served free to the patrons and the scene on the dancing floor was such as might have been witnessed in a fash ionable ball room of a large city. Many have expressed a desire to have these dancing parties given each month for the Denetit of the hospital. AMAZON AND BLACK BIRD. Pcnntylvanl Owned Properties Showing Up Good With Development. The Amazon group on Silver creek, a second extension of the Golconda, being bought by F. J. Conroy, of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, for parties of that city, is being rapidly and successfully developed. The work at the present time consists of a 4oo-foot tunnel, ioo-foot cross cut, which shows fifty feet of fine quartz, though the pay chute has not been found. Neither has there been any Indication of either wall. The Black Bird properties near the Bonanza Is also being developed by Mr. Conroy, by a crosscut tunnel which is nearly 600 feet in length. The shaft at this mine shows ore from 2.so to ji per ton, as indicated by various assays. The tunnel will strike the vein at about 760 feet, or about 510 teet below the clear of the shaft. It is expected to develop a mine fully as good as the Bonauza. The ledge on the east end of the Black Bird is being opened up by Colonel Ray and A. L. McEwen, in the White Ele phant, and on the west end, just across the hill, by Mr. Conroy, the vein showing good values at both ends. Carl Ailer Will Come to Sumpter. L. E.
