BIG FREIGHT BUSINESS.
Railroad and Teams all Work-
r
ing Overtime.
Immense quantities of freight are being
received in Sumpter at present. For a
week or ten days past an average of six
cars a day have been unloaded into the ware
house. This does not Include lumber,
stone and machinery, which do not pass
through the company's warehouse. The
amount of merchandise, exclusive of
building material and machinery, received
here thus far In November, Is at a rate ex
ceeding 15,000,000 pounds a month.
Sunday thirty cars of merchandise were
standing on side tracks, waiting to be un
loaded. The same, day twenty-two four horse
teams and wagons arrived here from one
camp in this district, to load freight for,
mines. Irwin & Slade have contracted to
haul sixteen carloads of supplies to the
milling districts. McEwen & Sloan, with
their large outfit, have all the freighting
they can possibly handle.
In addition to merchandise, many car
loads of lumber, stone, brick and other
building materials are being shipped to
Sumpter to supply the unprecedented de
mand. Contractors report that it Is dim
cult to get material as needed.
MORE SPOKANE MONEY.
Blue Jacket Group of Mines Sold and Will
be Developed.
J. G. McGuigan, of Spokane, who has
beou Identified with many of the largest
mining Interests thereabouts, particularly
In the Slocan district of British Columbia,
has been in Sumpter the past week, for
the second time within a few months. He
has negotiated the purchase for himself
and Henry Sieffert, another Spokane min
ing operator, of the Blue Jacket group of
claims, consisting of the Blue Jacket, In
dependence, First Chance and the Idaho,
all situated within a quarter of a mile
west of the well known Ibex inlne, ind
being a continuation of that lode.
These claims were discovered and lo
cated the past season and have only the
assessment work done upon them as yet,
but their location being an ideal one for
development, and the fact that they are of
easy access to the Granite wagon road,
only three or four miles away, makes the
new owner, Mr. McGuigan, who Is a
keen observer of long experience in min
ing matters, think he has a prize In the
new properties secured. It Is his purpose
to immediately begin extensively develop
ing the group and bringing out their hid
den treasures, as fast as men and money
can consummate this end. To accomplish
this he has secured as his representative
to put In full charge, R. J. McPhee, a
superintendent and mine manager of long
and tried experience.
At this writing it can only be said that
the favorable location of the claims, to
gether with Intended development on
them will probably result in the making
of valuable mines at a later day and will
be watched with much interest.
Eugene Sperry, E. Sanderson Smith
and R. J. McPhee worked up the deal and
consummated the sale.
The Englishes Pay $500,000 for a MJac.
The most Important mining deal in
western Washington for some time was
the transfer, a few weeks ago, of the
Post-Lambert group of claims in the
Mount Baker district to J. G. English
and J. T. English, of Sumpter, own
ers of the famous Golconda mine in Ore
gon. The ledge, consisting of five claims,
was purchased in November, 1807, for
J6o,ooo and sold last month for f $00,000.
The surface showing is said to be enor
mous, four ledges being exposed, two of
them about eighteen Inches wide and the
other two over four feet. One of the
veins has been traced for a distance of
2500 feet, and systematic sampling ot
1000 feet gave a return of over forty dol
lars to the ton, free milling ore. A spit in
the mountain exposes the lead to a depth
of about 100 feet. Work will be carried
on all winter on this property. Wm.
Connors, representing the owners, is
superintending the development.
Handsome Nugget From Pine Creek.
F. S. Slater was In town Sunday from
the Pine Creek placers, about ten miles
from Sumpter, bringing a gold-glutted
rock that is a beauty. It Is about the
size and shape of a turkey egg, is of
white quartz, fully three-quarters of which
Is virgin gold; or, as they more accurately
express it In Alaska, It is "gold, carrying
some rock." The nugget Is worn smooth
on the surface by friction. It was found
In the Pine Creek diggings a few days
since.
