Wednesday, October 25, 1899. THE SUMPTER MINER. EIGHT RESIDENCES. wsmsnmswim&missm Will Soon Be Built on Aus tin Street. WE BUY ALL OUR GOODS IN CARLOAD LOTS WHOLESALE AND RETAIL IS A V The Sumpter Townslte company has made a good deal with Contracter J. H. White good for the syndicate, the con tractor and the town. Mr. White has taken the concract to grade Austin street east from Mill, situ ated south of the railroad track, and will receive lots In payment for the work. On these lots he will build without delay eight dwelling houses. The work of grading the street, which runs through the syndicate's first addition, will be commenced Immediately. As soon as this is finished the houses will be erected. A few more transactions like this will give temporary relief to Sumpter's greatest need at present. ANOTHER "MOTHER LODE." Claims to Have Been Discovered Five Miles From Canyon City. Since our last publication the News of fice has been favored with a call from L. L. Hill, a veteran and successful pros pector, who Imparted the welcome Intelli gence that he had undoubtedly discovered the mother lode that has furnished Can yon Creek, Marysville, Prairie Diggings, and adjacent placer territory with all the gold the many fabulously rich mines have yielded during the past thirty-five or forty years, or since the first miner came to this part of eastern Oregon, with pan, pick and shovel, in search of the precious metals. The location of the new discovery Is about five miles east of Canyon City, and near Prairie Diggings. It is above the placers being worked there, and no doubt is the fountain head that has fed the mines in that place; In fact, that is the opinion of all the mining experts who have visited the claim. After the croppings had been discovered and traced to a considerable distance, Mr Hill had several assays made, with re sults so satisfactory that he Immediately proceeded to run a tunnel to tap the ledge at a considerable depth. We did not learn the exact number of feet, but as the side hill is steep and the tunnel 350 feet long, the ledge must have been tapped far enough under the ground to Insure the permanency of the mine. The ore body has a well defined foot wall, but the hang ing wall has not yet been reached, not withstanding the fact that the ledge has been cut to a distance of forty feet through white and gray quartz. The principal vein, however, and what in all probability Is the lead proper, Is fully eight feet In thickness and assays from $3 to f4o per ton. Canyon City News. Fire Bugs Again at Work in Baker. Early Friday morning the fire bugs did another job In Baker City. A negro named Johnson was seen near the barn about the time it was set on fire, and he was arrested. Since then he has made a partial confession, trying to Implicate a white man, named Donovan, and a Mex ican. The former was arrested but has been released, his innocense being estab lished to the satisfaction of the police. In his "confession" Johnson evidently tries to tell as many different tales as possible, and no one seems to take any stock in anything he says. Money In Doing Attemcnt Work. Attorney McCulloch some months since secured a fractional placer claim just west of town. He has recently been doing as sessment work with a view of getting a patent. He made a cleanup Saturday and took out $250 In dutt, a whole lot more than the work, proportionately, cost. To gether with A. W. Ellis he is interested In thirty acres.- .
