Council was In Baker City on a business trip early In the week. Mrs. James Cornfield arrived in Sumpter on the 4th, and will reside here. Mrs. J. Holton, of Boise, Idaho, is In Sumpter visiting her sister, Miss Roherts. Mrs. J. W. Cox reached Sumpter last week, and joined her husband. They are stopping at the Capital. Two carloads of machinery for the Gol conda's new stamp mill are expected to arrive today or tomorrow. W. S. Chlpp was joined by his family Sunday, who arrived from their former home In Arlington, Oregon. Rev. James Byers, of Ogdcn, Utah, will conduct divine worship at the church next Sunday, both morning and evening. General Warren, George McDowell, of Cortland, and one or two others went to Robiusonvllle yesterday on a mining deal. There arc a number of cases of typhoid fever in town at the present time; due, the doctors say, to the sanitary condition of the place. General Warren was in Baker City Sunday and gave the reporters a great "jolt" about what a line town the county seat Is and will be. Attorney Nixon, 01 lexas, more re cently from tile Yukon, Is In town with a view to locating here. He says Sumpter is much talked of on the Sound at present. II. II. I:rlt Is In Spokane attending the lair, lie will go to Republic before re turning. Maj. W. T. Manning Is In charge of his business during his absence. Mesdames I'. H. and R. I.. Neill joined their husbands in this city last week. A home had been built for them on North street and was ready for their reception on th:lr arrival. The RaMey-Elkhoru company is ar ranging to have its hoists operated by electricity, and will develop a water-power on I'lue creek, with which to generate the mysterious agency. Wallace Ki Hart are assayers who have leccntly arrived In Sumpter. They brought with theina "knock-down" house, which has been set up on Granite street, near the corner of Mill. W. I.. Vinson lias made the second payment on the Magnolia group of mines, consisting of $,ooo. A rich strike is re ported from that promising property, made while grading for a tramway. H. T. Booth, of Baker Clfy, agent for the old reliable Massachusetts Mutual Life, who has been In Sumpter for several days, left for a trip Into the hills yester day, doing business all the while. Rev. J. R. N. Bell, pastor of the First I'resbyterlan church of Baker City, preach ed In Sumpter last Friday evening. Mr. Bell was the orgauler of the first church congrrgatien hi Sumpter, over two years ago. Some Individual from Baker City went around town Monday night and defaced the fronts of many of the business houses by nailing on them dodgers, announcing a dance that he proposes giving in this town and tint is an evidence that he had his gall sack with him. Robert Kahler has arrived In Sumpter Irom Tacoma, to accept a position under his brother, the postmaster, made vacant by the resignation of M. C. Forman, who h bought an Interest In Case & Co.'s furniture business. He Is still In the post office, however, and will remain there for some days. Some weeks since a family, consisting of father, son and three daughters, ar rived here from Idaho, and made camp In the timber on the west side of the creek. They were all taken sick and, living in a tent with no conveniences, were in danger of losing their lives. Through the effort of Dr. Brock, the father, son and one daughter have been sent to the county hospital at Baker City. The other two daughters, who are convalescent, are still In the tent, in need of help, and ought to receive It. A call for another meeting of the Sump ter Club has been Issued for Friday even ing, to perfect the organization. Those who wish to become charter members are requested to hand In their names to one of the committee, or attend the meeting. The initiation fee will be raised after or ganization is perfected. CITY COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS. H. K. Wheeler Elected to Fill the Posi tion of City Engineer. At the meeting of the city council Sat urday evening, the regular monthly re ports of city officers were read and filed, and a lot of bills allowed. A communication from the management of the Spokane fair, Inviting members of the city government to attend the show, was read and ordered placed In the archives. The committee on streets reported on the petition to open up Columbia street, but action was deferred for one week. Applications were received from H. K. Wheeler and C. C. Adams for the posi tion of city engineer. The former was elected by unanimous vote. The engineer, attorney and recorder were Instructed to draft an ordinance reg ulatlng street grades and report at the next meeting. Ballantyue was given permission to lay a water pipe to his laundry. Farewell to Profotor SeUog. Friday afternoon Professor W. L. Sal ing closed his connection with the public schools of Sumpter as principal, and left for Heppner Sunday, where he will make his future home. To show their apprecia tion of the gentleman, Mrs. Tedrowe and Mrs. Steffens gave an entertainment at the Capital hotel Saturday evening, com plimentary to the professor. Only a few Intimate friends attended, among whom were ProfessorSallng, Dr. and Mrs. Tape, Mr. and Mrs. Fills, Mr. and Mrs. Steffen, Mr. and Mrs. Tedrowe, Miss Spauldlng, Miss Myers, Mr. Jewett, Mr. Manning. It was late In the evening before the guest was notified that his presence was desired; and when he was ushered Into the parlor, where his friends awaited him, he was In vited Into the dining room, where a most elaborate spread was displayed. After the refreshments the party adjourned to the parlor and spent the remainder of the evening In singing, music and social in tercourse. Two New Teachers. Miss Vanderberg, of Monmouth, who is to have charge of the third and fourth grades in the public school here, arrived In time to take charge of her classes Monday. Miss Terry, of Baker City, having been appointed a teacher in the public school of Sumpter, was present Monday, and was assigned the first and second grades.
