Wednesday, October 4, 1899. THE. SUMPTER MINER. 4r l S. V. R. R. EXTENSION "Miner's" Statement Denying the Rumor Confirmed. Last week THE MINER made the state ment that there wits no truth in the Baker City published story that the Sumpter Valley railroad would be extended be yound this camp; that the company only contemplated building a branch road from McEwen, for logging purposes, has already been confirmed. The Idaho Statesman of Monday pub lished a wired story from Pendleton, giv ing the details of the fake report; and continuing says: "A gentleman who is Interested in the mines, of the Baker City district Js Jji Pendleton today and has made it htebus Iness to run down the tumor, and to as certain from reliable sources the facts in the case. He states that the Sumpter Valley road will not build the extension, and that the road will not be run through to make the connection with. Pendleton by the plan mentioned. ' His Information comes from rio less au thoritative source than C. W. Nibley, president of the Sumpter Valley road. Mr. Nibley was asked regarding the report, and said hi reply that it would not be a profitable move on the company's part to build any further into the mining district. It is ore shipping, In connection with mining, that brings rev enue Into the company's coffers. Simply to carry supplies to a camp will not afford sufficient traffic to make the extension pay. In the Granite region,, the mines are of such a character that the ore is crushed on the ground, stamp mills being operated, and there would be but little ore ' to ship. This is good enough reason for the company to abandon all thought of building the extension. 1 Mr. Nibley, however, did state that the company would probably soon, and cer tainly" sometime, build a spur 'track to Durkee, from a point about six miles this side of Sumpter; for the purpose of tap plng.the tine belt of timber, on the hills there. This timber will furnish traffic for the road, and it is traffic that any railroad company is looking for." Both President Eccles and Vice-President Nibley, of the Sumpter Valley line, were in this city Saturday, looking over a tract of land to which they contemplate removing their round house and" shops, and while here gave assurance to several prominent1 citWns '.that practically' con firmed the above. When you see it in THE MINER it may uot be entirely the truth ; but It can be re lied upon as an almighty close guess at the facts In the case. Expect to Work the Glimax. The Climax group of mines, consist ing of Columbia No. 2, Golden Chariot, E. S. Rastle, Climax and Orizaba, Is 'owned by G. W. and Robert R. Grayson, ,'Mr. Ralston, all of San Francisco, and P. R. Bishop, of this district. The Cll 'max proper was an original purchase from Clark Taber, owner of the Red Boy, and ..Charjey Cable, formerly of the Colum bia mine. 'This group of properties' has about 1,200 feet of tunnel work, besides various shafts and -upraises, and the pres ent owners contemplate extensive work on them this1 winter, as they claim to have sufficient ore values to justify It. ... , 1- -- Woodmen's, Daflcc Nugget Camp No. 408, W. of W.,will give a grand entertainment and ball on Thanksgiving eve, the details and pro gram for which will be announced later.""'
