The paper will cover the local held, giving especial prominence to mining news and Information pertaining to realty, huildiiiK and Improvements gen erally; will do all in its power to adver tise to the world the marvelously rich re sources of this section of country, conlin I MC itself always to facts. We here make no untidy promises, nor weary the reader with a verbose exposition of our content' plated policy, preferlug that each issue of Till: MlNhU shall speak for itself. C. II. MAHSH, .1. W. CONNIH.I.A. Ol'COUHSli Sumpter will organize a separate and distinct mining district, one tli.it will soon be famous as the greatest C.old producer on the continent. SUMI'TliH has a doen saloons, one ihtirch edilice and no resident pastor. There is almost as rich and virgin a field here for the labors of those who seek to lay up treasures in heaven, as for those who are hustling to accumulate this world's goods. TllOSI: Spokane rustlers who developed the Hrillsh Columbia mines, who are mis performing the same service lor the reser vation prospects in the vicinity of Repub lic, Wash., are turning their attention Siiinpterward, and dining recent weeks have become grntifyinglyutimeruusuit the streets of tills camp and in the mountains ol this district. I hey are promoters who promote and should therefore be cordially welcomed. rilliKU are nlw.iv inanv annoyances and unlooked tor dilliculties encounteied in getting out the lirst issue of a p.iper. I HliMlNhU has been "upagahist every one on the list, and added others. No apology will, therelote, be nude for any specllied defects In this number. The man agement desires to state, however, that it Is the intention to use hall-tone cuts ex tensively, Illustrating local scenes of inter est, and regrets that in this It has been dis appointed lor the present. ONLY one complaint regarding tlia Similiter mining district emanates from promoters and speculators who visit this I section; which Is Hint owners of properties are reluctant to sell. Having accepted as an axiom of the business the hackneyed phrase that "all mines were made to sell," ' they arc disappointed and sometimes In dignant when an owner refuses to put any nrlce on his mine, or even prospect. This Is undoubtedly tough on Hie speculator, I but speaks volumes favorable to the dis trict. j UNTOKTUNATIil.Y a feeling of un friendliness has arisen between Sumpter and Haker City nothing very serious as dominated the surrounding business and Industrial world, while only during recent months lias Sumpter come into her own, claimed the inheritance bequeathed her by nature, Hie fruits of a valuable strategic position to command the rich commerce of Hie adjacent golden-ribbed (Hue Moun tains. We nil know that It is human na ture for an older individual to resent Hie pretentions of a younger rival, how ever well-founded they may be, and this is equally true of communities, merely an aggregation of Individuals, controlled by the ordinary motives influencing human nature hi general. Maker City has mani fested this resentment towards Sumpter's ambitions by studiedly Ignoring this town andcalmlyclalmlug everything hi sight for its own. This irritates the ambitious young rival. Though this course may be natural, it is unquestionably poor business policy. The Haker City Republican defends this course and that town's title to all the mines in Eastern Oregon by Hie more or less dogmatic assertion that Haker Is the banking and commercial center of Hie dis trict, but Is not shrewd enough to Hius dis miss the subject with a metaphorical lofty wave of the hand. It unwisely attempts to establish this title to all the surround ing earth by citing precedents, mentioning Denver, Helena, and Spokane. Denver ' did not secure and hold l.eadvllle's trade I and goodwjll by persistently claiming the , Little Pittsburg to be in the "Denver dis trict," Helena never advertised to the world that Hie Anaconda was a Helena property. Spokane frankly acknowl edges that Hie l.e Hoi Is iuHritlsh Colum I bin, nnd that there Is a town there or thereabouts called Hossland. Yet Haker papers, people and pamphlets stubbornly refuse to accord to Sumpter a public official acknowledgment of its existence, and that the Red l-'oy, thetjolconda and a score of other mines are here in operation, and that the employes thereof are spending their wages In this camp. The eyes of Hie mining world are focussed 011 Sumpter, and it can not he ignored to anv sine purpose, linker City must necessarily be benefitted by this fact, nnd the sooner Its citizens and busi ness men recoguie it as a fact and act accordlnglv, the greater and richer will be Hie benelitsreiped by them. ARE HUNGRY FOR MINES. Euttm CipiUlUts Subscribe $5,000,000 for Wl r n Investments. yet, but still the sparks of animosity are sufficiently alive to be tanned Into a fierce llame of passion, unless they are smoth ered without delay. It Is the desire of THE MINER to assist in this smothering process. No man of common sense can fall to see that Incajculable benefits will accrue to both towns If they work togeth er harmoniously, and that much Injury will be done to both If they waste their enemies in seeking to detract from each other's Importance, either real or fancied. Haker City Is an old town, has for years Col. (ieorge W. I:. Dorsey, who re turned a day or two since to Salt Lake trom an extended ea'.ern trip, brings the tidings that a number of New England bankers and capitalists, principally of Maine and Vermont, have organized under the laws of the state of Maine what Is to be known as the New England Explora tion company, with a capital of f 5,000,- 000, for the purpose of investing in mines, mining stock and developed prospects in the districts to the west. Colonel Dorsey met some of the mov ing spirits hi the enterprise, and a more enthusiastic set of men, he says, he never saw hi his life. The capital stock was all subscribed in 110 time; In fact there was not enough to go around, and the men mak ing up the company are the shrewdest and wealthiest people of the states named. Learning that Colonel Dorsey was from Utah, they besieged him with all sortsof inquiries and asked his advice and opinion 011 many subjects connected with their scheme, and before he left he had their assurance that they would have rep resentatives out here in a very short time. It is the purpose of the compay, Mr. Dor sey says, to establish agencies or branch offices at different points throughout the mining regions, and get action on their money just as soon as possible. The 1 5,000,000 for which the company is capi talized does not begin to represent the amount of money the people will invest if the opportunities present themselves. Haker Democrat.
