FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 1914
CENSORSHIP OF "MOVIES."
The Democrat ventures the asser
tion that a moving picture show, prop
erly conducted, is an educational and
oftentimes a great moral force in the
community. It is primarily the poor
mail's theater, but it gives to both
rich and poor alike a source of enter
tainment at a nominal price.
It is now proposed that the moving
picture shows of Albany be closed on
Sunday.
Assuming that the films contain
no hint of immorality, the Democrat
can sec no particular reason why the
workinginc!! of Albany should be de
nied the privilege of attending these
shows on Sunday afternoon. We fail
to sec wherein there is anything in
herently bad in attending a show
of this character unless the crowds
are drawn by sensational advertising
to an immoral and indecent exhibition.
We believe that our children might
spend their Sunday afternoon in worse
places than the moving picture em
poriums. We contend that Sunday
should be a day of both worship and
relaxation from the cares of Imsincs.i.
If the workiiigiiiau finds that relax
alion in a moving picture show he is
entitled to pay his dime for the pnvi
lege of finding a comfortable seat
and seeing a! pictorial review of the
events of the week. If the business
man finds his relaxation in driving
his touring car to a neighboring town,
reading his newspaper, or gossiping
with his friends, he is entitled to thai
nrivilege. We arc all free moral
airents and should be entitled to
choose our own recreation, provided
thai, in so doing we break none of
laws of Ciod or man.
True it is that some of the pictures
which have been shown in Albany on
Sunday were not such as would com
mand themselves to the best think
ing people of the city. It is an old
rule, however, that every wrong has
a remedy. We believe that this abuse
.-: be corrected by a board of censor-
shin. This board should be clothed
with the power to pass upon and re
ject any or all films of an immoral or
questionable nature which t lie tnea
trr men may propose to run on the
first day of the week. It should be
the privilege and duty of its members
to protect the public against any pic
ture which is calculated to corrupt
the morals of the young or the old
In conclusion wc assert that you
can't make men better by denying
them a rational form of amusement,
or hit the snake of immorality by
aiming the gun of reform at a fly.
NOT A HYPOCRITE.
Declaring that he h.s not luvn

and letters urging him to become a
candidate and that he enters th
race "without any undue influence."
11. !'. Jones, register of the U. S
land office at Koseburg. in an open
letter to a Douglas county paper, ior
nialy announces his candidacy for the

from the first congressional district.
The Democrat congratulates June

say that the first gun of his campaign
Has not loaded with hypocriev We
are glad to note that U. 1' .tones, of

of R. A. Hooth. of Eugene. We are
glad that he had the courage and the

candidate for the office, instead of
adopting the llual custom of yielding
to the pressure brought to bear bv

Because it i .1 clcaicut and straight

for congress. However, believing in
the principle that if a man wants any
thing the bc,t way to get it is to go
after it, and not wait for it to come
to him, and holding to the doctrine
that under our form of government
it is no disgrace to seek an office at
the hands of the people, I therefore
desire to say that after due consider

NATURALIZATION APPLICANTS
CAUSED FUNNY SITUATIONS
Circuit Judge Galloway Yes

in One Day.
Serene mirth was barely avoided
several times in Circuit Judge Gal

sult of situations growing out of ques

cants for naturalization, when fifteen
applications, by far the largest num
ber ever passed tip1" one day hero,
were acted upon by the judge. Cu
iutcntional comical situations' arose all
at the expense of the applicants.
One applicant was asked wh.it kind
ot a government, was that of the Unit

urged: "Monarchy?" lie replied in
the negative. "Is it republican?" ask
ed Judge Galloway. "No, it is Oeiu

replied the applicant. Another ma-i
thought Miyan was vice-president and
another said he remembered that
Chamberlain was once a governor,
but, had forgotten what Hie was doing
now. Situations nearly too intricate
to describe came up, all of which
were of a similar character and those
present in the court room could hard
ly restrain their mirth at times.
Twelve of the applicants were ad
mitted to citizenship, one petition was
dismissed and two were continued.
The applicants admitted were Wil
