FRIDAY, JANUARY 2. 1914.
BOOSTING BOOTH.
I'll I tin;; a dde all thoughts of per
sonal or pecuniary advantage, and
howiiitf to the v.-ill of thousands oi
patriotic and enthusiastic Oref-jonians,
Senator R. A. 1 South of Fugere lias
finally condescended lo accept a seat j
in the United States Senate.
Never before in (he history of the
slate has it required so much "ury
mg" to induce an obscure member
of the Get on state legislature to he
come a candidate for a berth in the
"greatest deliberative body in the j
world." Never before has a candi- j
dale showed the same rare disc re-
lion in the choice of his stage man
ager, or shown better judgement in
making his selection of a press agent.
Political dynamite, with time clock
attachments, was placed in every sec
tio nof the state. On the appointed
hour there arose from every village
and hamlet, a spontaneous demand
that the Kugenc State Senator put
aside his personal desires and inclina
tions, (urn his back upon the business
world, answer the call of the multi
tude, and accept a seat in the senate
of the United States. It was truly the
most wonderful feat of engineering
since the completion of the Panama
Canal.
The Senator was at first completely
overwhelmed by the almost universal
demand for his candidacy from the
people of the great stale in which
he has passed the best years of his life.
II c was surprised and du in founded,
for the idea of becoming a candidate
for this great office had never entered
his mind until (he time clock struck
the hour which was the signal for the
explosion. He begneil time in which tn
consider (be matter ami finally yield
ed, under llie great pressure bronchi
to bear by his stage director and
press agent. The formal announce
ment of his candidacy followed.
The Democrat did not join in the
demand for this sacrifice upon the
part of the Kugene Senator. Senator
Booth is a busy man. lie has large
financial interests Mild he owes a cer
tain duly lo himself and to his fam
ily. Stage managers and press ageu:.-.
are expensive and he inn si bear (he
financial burden of the campaign from
his own private resources.
To our mind it is truly unfortunate
that Senator Booth permitted R. A.
Booth and the hitter's campaign man
ager to induce him to enter the race
for the senate. It is unfair to the
Kugene Senator and to his family. It
will prove as expensive as is will dis
astrous. Tin lVinoerat is willing to
help eat the lamb in November, hut
we regret that (bus early in the eaiu-j-aign.
we must witness the poo:
creature being lead to the slaughter
by himself.
1 1 pays to advertise any tiling but
your faults.
There is little harmony in the voi
ces of the young men who sing at
the new library alter the clock strikes
11 p. in. Farlier in the evening their
oiees appear to blend nicely.
1 iiioranee and conceit are twin
brothers. It is of this kind of dust
that snobs are made.

mechanical ami noise making toys i
