A NINE WORD BIOGRAPHY
"Harry Lane, Democrat of Oregon;
term expires March ,1919." The above
is a biugrap'hical sketch of the junior
senator from Orrgon as prepared and
submitted by himself. The congres
sional directory will contain no furth
er details concerning I larry Lane
than those which the senator has giv
en to the printer.
'Ic boasts not of a wort'hy sire, the
creditable record he made while serv
ing as the mayor of the metropolis of
Oregon, of bis long struggle for pro
gressive legislation, of his rugged
honesty, nor of the fact that Almighty
Providence selected as his birib place
tiie great stale of Oregon, lie could
have used innumerable pages of con
gressional space in informing a cur
ious public in regard to his own vir
tues and the virtues of his ancestors.
1 1. 'id he billowed this course he would
have carried out a time honored cus
tom in Washington.
A congressman's vanity can best be
determined by the number of pages
he uses in writing his own biography.
Lane has broken the record for brev
ity and common sense, lie has dem
on st rated that he is in Washing Ion
to serve t'he people of Oregon ami not
there solely for the purpose of grati
fying bis own personal vanity. The
Democrat 'therefore congratulates the
junior senator from Oregon on his
nine word biography.
o
l'.x-Sonator Hon rue appears to be
about the only resident of Oregon
who is dissatisfied with the adminis
tration of ('resident Wilson. We
therefore assume that Bourne will take
another shot at the senatorial toga,
via the Republican primaries.
Since Governor West has made it
plain mat lie will not hecome a can
didate for re-election, many of our
Republican friends concede t'hat he
has made better than an average chief
executive.
THE MAN WHO PAYS.
The man who pays his bills on time
finds life journey most sublime; he
has a minimum of care; the glad hand
greets him everywhere; on every door
mat t'herc appears the "Welcome"
word, through all his years; and par
ents see he's in the swim and name
their babies after him, ami lovely girls
he round him finds, with "Bridal
Chorus" in their minds. And when
he's old, his whiskers while, he's held
up as a shining light; tie young arc
urged to gang his gait and keep their
credit clean and straight; and when
he shut s bis world-with eves and
kicks the bed clothe off and dies,
deep sorrow does the town unfold,
and all the bells in grief are tidied.
en to the hone-yard he is borne
the people all turn out to mourn,
and see that he is planted right, and
touching elesies indite. But he who
doesn't pay his bills is all faced by
grevious ills; no girl-i arc camping on
his trail to work him for a wedding
veil, and people view "him witli dis
dain, and say he gives the town a pain,
lie slinks through life with furtive
step, to dodge the sheriff or his dep.
Walt Mason.

CORRESPONDENT ANSWERS
CHARGES OF NEIGHBOR
Crabtree, Or., Dec. 3. (To the ed
itor,) In the December 2nd issue of
the Albany Daily Democrat, I find an
article in answer to one that I wroits
some time ago regarding Crab'.ree'-i
attitude toward the Oregon university
appropriation. The author of this
little speil, H. C. Asher, is feeling very
nadly because my name did not aopear
in print in connection with this article.
I signed my name to my correspond
ence and always do so, but some well
meaning member of the office force,
in setting type, signed me "Corres
pondent." Mr. Asher is very much
mistaken if he thinks I write articles
to which I am ashamed to sign my
name. High minded people nev
stoop to such petty deceptions. Again
I must ask the party at the office to
take his share of the blame for mis
quoting me in the item I sent in, in
which I apologized for being too hard
on the community. I alone, am re
sponsible for the article in question
and if there is any blame to be taken,
1 m ready and witling to take it.
Mr. Asher's little fling about my
being an egotist and high minded is
very amusing. It is very kind of him
not to cast any reflection on the out
come of the election, since said elec
tion resulted just as the-"high mind
ed" most desired. He doubtless does
not need to be told that the result o:
t'he election was the united efforts of
the "high minded" throughout the -m-tire
state.
is tme everybody has the legal
right to vote as their .conscience dic
tates, but how any man or woma.i
with a conscience can deliberately vote
down a measure which mean5; so
much lo the present generation md
future 'joslerity as does the appropiii
tion foi ;iu. university of Orc.o i is
be, oik! tl comprehension of "high
minded" people. I am glad to not
that Mr. Asher is sorry that the
"high minded" have to spend their
"precious lives" among people with
out "brains of intellect." Manifest sor
row denotes a certain degree of intel
lect (sometimes small), therefore hope
tor the redemption ot the ignorant
may be entertained.
In conclusion I wish to thank Mr.
Asher and his "81" for their hearty
welcome to "get out." H owever, if
it's all the same to them, I think I
shall choo-.c my own time of "get
ling." MRS. D. WM. HATCH.
