NOVEMBER 28, 1913 THE HOPGROWERS COMBINE A movement was launched Satur day al Salem for the formation of the hopgrowers of Oregon into a cooper ative organization similar to that so common now and so successful among the fruitgrowers of the Northwest. The proposed organization will have among its many objects the control of each year's hop crop and its sale in the highest market, the saving of a big sum each year by the purchase at wholesale of supplies for the orga nization's members, and the matter of chief importance according to those present at the meeting the elimina tion of (lie hop speculator. Salem is oidy one town of many where doz ens of fori lines have been amassed by men who speculate hi hops. This, the hopgrowers claim, is wrong, and if there is any profit in the produc tion of hops it belongs by right to the man who produces them, That seem ed to be the kepnole of the Salem meeting to eliminate the non-producer. The formation of this organization among the hopgrowers, whether suc cessful or not and by all means it should be is another evidence of the world-wide thought so prevalent in men's minds today which has as its moving spirit the conviction) that the fruits of labor belong to the man who produces them, and that there is no moral foundation for the seizure of the greater part of the profit accru ing from the world's labor by the non-producer. Due reads daily of the spread of this idea among the workers and thinkers of the world, and the time is short until it will be an accepted tenet of ethics. BELEIVED THAT HE SET FIRE TO PAPERS IN CELL Is Confined in St. Mary's Hos pital with Severly Burned Back and Arms. Apparently emulating the attempt of Otto Lcsch, to burn his way out of ti.e city jail sometime ago, J. A darkness, an umlirella mender, nai - rowjy escaped death or serious injury last night, when, it is believed hy i he police, set lire to the city jail. It this be the case it is the second sim ilar attempt within a sort time at the destruction of the city jail. But for the timely assistance of Joseph Rals ton Darkness would have probably perished in the flames instead of ly ing in St. .Mary s I lospital, with se vere burns on his back, hands and arms. 1 1 is injuries arc not f prions 1 larkness xx as arrested by Officer A 1 Marshall al 7:30 o'clock on a charge of drunkenness and disorderly conduct. It is believed that the man deliberately set fire to some papers in the cell he occupied as there was no fire in the jail. The flames had gained rapid headway xvheu Ralston heard the inmate screaming. 1 his was about 9 o'clock. Me rushed form his place of business and with the use of a small axe hammered the staple of a heavy lock off. Dick Churchill in the mean time appeared with a hand extinguisher ami had the flames ianiy under control when the fire depart ment arrived. The damage to the jail is comparatively slight. Harkins occupied a cell on the upper story. The fire started among some papers in the southwest corner and raged up the wall to the ceiling. All indications lead to the belief that Harkins either intentionally or accidentally dropped a lighted match among the papers. 1 owever, he claims he did not have a match in his possession. Chief of Police Aus tin staled this morning that the jail had been t horotighly cleaned yester day and that the papers were piled in a rack on the wall. Investigation re vealed the fact that the papers were piled in the corner. Harkins xvas the only prisoner in the jail at the time. Harkins, xvheu (the jail was broken into, was unconscious. He was car ried out ami hurried to the hospital xv here he was revived. This morning he xvas reported as restin' easilv al though his back is severely blistered. His hands and arms are badly burned.
