BETTER ROADS.
If there is any subject upon which
the business men and farmers should
be able to reach a unanimous agree
ment it is upon the subject of good
roads for they both have a commun
ity of interest in bringing the farmer
closer to his market.
Not until the county becomes a ver
itable net work ,of well built roau-i
will the large farms be divided into
hitialler tracts. Smaller farms mean
more settlers, more modern meth
ods of farming, 'better prices for the
land and a higher rale of interest on
the investment than can now be ob
tained from agricultural property.
Linn county has spent a good deal
of money for good roads but it ha
not spent enough. Better public high
ways pay a high rate of interest to
every tax payer and the county court
can make no better investment than
in spending a larger sum for road
the 26th day of October. Stamped on
new era in road construction and im
provement. a glorious Picture.
'To what are we coming? The
senate is to be steam-rolled by t'"e
president and the house and cotn
pclcd to pa.ss the currency bill they
framed. Looking back no, furthei
than a generation, we sec both presi
dent and house dominated by such
men as Edmunds, Hoar, Sherman,
Male,, Allison, Cullom, Aldricii and
Root. When a bill went over to (he
senate from the house, they took it to
. pieces and made it all over again, and
their work was 'substantially ihe bill
which finally became law. "--Morning

Having a profound respect for an
cient tradition and bound by the iron
chains of precedent and moth eaten
custom, the Oregonian looks with dis
favor upon the new order of thing
in the politics of the 20th century,
Aldrich, who was once a political
gou in the eyes of the Oregonian cd
itor has been crucified upon the alter
of progress. Edmunds, Hoar, Hale,
Sherman and Allison are dead. Cul
lom and Root have broken the faith
and will soon be numbered among the
discards.
True it is that Senator Aldrich and
his faithful band of followers will go
down in history as expert legislative
tailors. They learned to use the nee
dle of deception skillfully ami well
They punched holes in the legisla
tive garments sent up for their in
spection by the house of representa
tives and were so apt at their trade
that the ordinary citizen was wholly
unable to see the rent in the cloth
when the same was finally mailed out
under the senatorial frank for their
inspection.
Aldrich was the bright star of hope
in the mansions of the rich. He was
uncrowned king of the senate and the
senate was ruler of the land. His
smile of approval meant political ad
vancement ami his frown meant poli
tical exile to the members of his par
ty. He was the brains of the senate
and the first friend of the big inter
ests. He drew the teeth from meri
torious measures which were design
ed to protect the weak and supplied
the teeth in measures which were
drafted in the interests of the strong
Equity and justice were driven from
the chamber and corporation greed
ami political favor made the yard
stick by which every bill was mea
sured. It became the graveyard of
progress and the birthplace of the
trusts. The master mind of Aldrich
ruled supreme over the majority
members and the master himself was
the tool of V:ill Stiert.
What a glorioiM picture has our
good friend the Oregonian printed
a picture of Sena'or Aldrich of Rhode
Island holding in the palm of his
band the destinies of the American
nation.
TOUR OF O.E. LINE
Colonel Clough, Board Chair
man and George Slade Were
Albany Visitors.
ARE INSPECTING VALLEY
FROM WINDOW OF CAR
No Other Significance Attached
to Trip; Conditions Are Good
Says Colonel.
"The purpose of our trip through
the valley is to look over the Wil
lamette alley from the car window
and get an idea of what it looks like
and incidentally to inspect the Ore
gon Electric railway."
W. D. Skinner, publicity represen
tative of the party of Northern Pa
cific railroad officials, who arrived
here this noon on a special train ov
er the Oregogn Electric railway from
1'orlland, gave out that statement
shortly after their arrival at the Ham
mel Hotel where the party dined.
Members of the party are Colonel
W. 1 Clough, of New York City,
chairman of the board of director-
of the Northern Pacific, George T.
Slade, of St. Paul, first vice president;
Thomas Cooper, of St. Paul, assistant
to President Hannford; H. C. Blanc ii
ard, general manager; George T. KchI,
and J. B. Richards, general superin
tendent, all of Tacoma; A. J. David
son, L. Wickersham and VV. D. Skin
ner, all of Portland and all liih of
ficials of the railroad comnauv.
We lett Portland tins morning at
8 o'clock" said Mr. Skinner, "and it
was rather chilly but it has turned .ff
to be a beautiful day and the members
of our party are enjoying the irip im
mensely. We are making a hurry
trip as we have got to cover a dis-
ince of 294 miles from Portland to
Eugene and return by' tonight.
lomorrow we will make a trn over
the United Railways out of Portland
to Orenco and return... We are going
to make similar trips over the com
pany's lines in this state and Wash
ington before the colonel and his par
ty returns to the East. This is Col
onel Clough's first trip through the
valley and he is desirous 01 seeing
is much as he can.
The special train on which the rail
road men arrived in the city, reached
the depot a Jew minutes after 12
o'clock. The party of nine walked to
the Hamtnel, where they immediately
went to the dining room ior dinner.
Shortly after 1 o'clock they departed
for the depot and a little lacer were
euroute to Eugene, where thev will
only remain for a short time before
starting on the return trip.
1 he party was too much 111 a hurry
to accept any courtesies from local
people. A proffer ot a short automo
bile ride through the main business
hstrict was declined.
Responding to a query, Colonel
Clough said that he was only carry
ing out what was necessary to every
otlicial ol a railroad system in mak
mg the trip, that of inspecting the
lines. Aside from this, he said, there
is no other significance attached to
the trip. It is the colonel s first
trip over the road since becoming
chairman of the board.
The party being in a hurry, Mr,
Skinner lingered long enough to au
thorize statements as made by Colo
nel C lough that he was glad to find
omutions m the west good and that
the Northern Pacific railroad was in
splendid physical condition. Colonel
Clough is quoted as saying that the
ouutrv in general is prosperous hut
there is a shortage m capital available
for loans but that this feature was
apidly adjusting itself.
The partv arrived in Portland last
night from Mend, atter a tour ot in
snection in Eastern Oregon. The cot
oncl and those accompanying him
from St. Paul are conducting a thor
ougli inspection of the road. The
left St. Paul on November 0 anil
are hardiv halt through as yet, ac-
ording to a statement accredited to
the colonel. Parts of the road passed
over in a hurry or at night will be
inspected on the return trip.
Speaking ot the climate ot the Wil
lamette valley, all members of the
party spoke in the highest terms. It
was the concensus ot opinion ot all
hat the dav was most ideal and open
opinions were to the effect that this
is Mtrelv the sun kissed Willamette
Valley.
Lee Hilyeu. a real estate man of
Lebanon, was in the city yesterday at
tending business. He returned home
this morning.
Albert L. KtiU.tnder, of Corvallis.
formerly of this city, was in the city
over night, stopping at the Hammei.
He attended the session of the K. P.

ness. He will return home this

"KING APPLE" IS TODAY
REIGNING ALL OVER
THE UNITED STATES
Event Initiated in Portland is
Being Observed With Much
Enthusiasm and by Many
Civic Bodies.
All over the Union the apple today
is exalted as the "king of fruits" for
this is "apple day" proclaimed official
ly by Governor Oswald West, boost
ed by the Oregon Development
League and chambers of commerce
;ind commercial clubs throughout the
land.
Almost every hotel in the state ami
the larger hostelries of Washing
ton and California have fallen in line
with the idea originating in Portland.
He Mdcs reports have been received
from hotels in far distant states that
they will serve apples in every form,
in fritters, as sauces to meats, as jel
lies, in pies, dumplings, as cider in
soups, and even the homely apple
jack, solace of many a weary farm
hand, is to he diguitied into an appe
tizing cocktail. Portland's celebra
tion took ou quiet but general form.
1 he Northern Pacific sent forth . a
great motor truck fitted up like a din
ing car, from which colored waiters
tossed thousands of apples to the
lace. Several civic clubs held special
ipple luncheons at which the apple
was served and lauded in song and
story.
1 he apple day idea originated
with the idea of stimulating the popu
larity of the fruit all over the nation.
incidentally widening the market 01
the Pacific Northwest.
Local hotels and restaurants arc
today serving special dishes made up
of apples prepared in various ways.
1 he stores have apples on special
sale and everywhere is manifested the
spirit of "apple day."
R. W. Trip, a prominent real estate
