Southern Pacific Improvements.
That the Southern Pacific railway
lias no fear of financial depression as
a result of the change in administra
tion, is indicated by the formal state
ment filed with the California rail
way commission, setting forth in de
tail the improvements proposed for
the years 1913 and 1914.
The company asks for permission to
issue bonds in the sum of $30,01X1,000
for the electrification of the lines oper
ated in the Willamette valley, the re
construction of the Corvallis & East
ern and other extensive improvements
in railroads operated by the Southern
Pacific in Oregon.
Whcu a great railroad company like
the Southern Pacific sees no dark
clouds on the financial horizon, it is
a fairly good indication that the money
pulse of the country is normal.
The Southern Pacific, or no other
great railroad company will expend
any considerable sum of money in ex
tensions or improvements unless they
feel certain that business conditions
arc favorable. They are not in the
transportation business ctr their
health and will never spend a dollar
for improvements unless there is a
reasonable chance of obtaining an im
mediate return on their investment.
Good Roads Convention
There is no subject of more vital
concern to the residents of L.iun coun
ty than that of good roads. The busi
ness men and the fanner arc equally
interested in the maintenance of first
class highways from the rural districts
to the more populous centers: They
luive a community of interest in this
subject.
The Democrat suggests that a date
lie fixed for n l,inn county good roads
convention, at which representatives
from the various commercial clubs and
granges could outline a county cam
paign for belter highways. The meet
ing could 'be called at Albany or at
some other convenient point and ev
ery section of the county should be in
vited to send representatives. Some
uniform plan of improving the roads
should be adopted and a convention of
this character is the sensible way in
which to take the initial step.
The Baker Democrat makes the fol
lowing editorial comment upon the
encouragement of manufacturing en
terprises: "Towns in the j-oiithcrn part of the
state have started a movement to en
courage the establishment of factories
ami thereby create payrolls. It is

should be directed for nothing carries

To issue her own marriage license,
after performing similar duties for
others the past two and one half years,
was the unique experience which be
fell Miss Daisy Savage, the charming
and affable deputy in County Clerk
W. L. Marks office Saturday after
noon at 5 o'clock, when Truman D.
Babb, her husband-to-be entered the
clerk's office and asked for the license.
That she might have the rare and
unprecedented honor of making out
the blank for her own marriage, there
by performing her last official act as
a deputy in the office. County Clerk
Marks and Deputy County Clerk Rus
sell, generously refused the honor,
despite the blushing appeals of Miss
Savage, who finally walked up to the
counter, and bravely'struggled through
the ordeal. She asked the blushing
and bashful young man all the neces
sary questions, pertaining to himself

tender susceptibilities and emotions
of true femininitv. one could hard I v
percejve that Miss Savage was making
out her own marriage license. How-j
ever, after keeping her courage and
laboring bravely thrdughout the cere-1
mony of filling out the blank. Miss
Savage faltered under the trving or- j
deal and was compelled to give vent:
to her pent 110 feelings -and suddenly
the clerk's office turned into a scene'
of merriment. However, blushing 1
deeply between ripples of laughter,!
she councluded the task to her great !
relief and as he stood on the opposite
side of the counter. Mr. Babb, whose
blushing face had been superceded
with a clear, undaunted countenance,
gazed upon his wife to be. and those
who saw the expression at a glanctf
read it to be one of glowing nride and
proudness of the charming little girl,
who is to become his wife.
Miss Savage has hern employed in
the county" clerk's office for the last
2V veitrs and since that time she has
made a host of friends, among county
n'ticals and residents of the county.
She has resided here for many years
and has a larcre circle of friends. Miss
Savnpe is a graduate of the commercial
department of the Albany Collctre.
Mr. Babb is a well known youm? man
of this citv and is employed as r.n ac
countant in the Veal chair factory.
The wedding will be solemnized this
evening.

PIONEER DIES

John W. Pugh Died at His Home
This Morning After Linger
ing Illness.
HE BECAME RESIDENT
AT AGE OF ONE YEAR
Funeral Services Will Se Held
Tomorrow Afternocn
at Shedd.
John W. Pugh, a well and favorably
known pioneer of Linn county, died
this morning at his home near Shedd,
after a lingering illness.
Crossing the plains by ox team with
his parents from Iowa, the deceased
became a resident of Washington
county, Oregon at the age of one year.
Later the family removed to Linn
county.aud settled on a iargc donation
land claim. Upon reaching manhood,
the late Mr. Pugh was content to make
his future home in the section where
he lived during his early boyhood, and
las since resided on a farm 1 1-12 miles
from Shedd; where bed had been en
gaged in general' farming and dairying.
Industry and energy, governed by in
tellect, numbered him among the lead
ing and successful agriculturalists of
the county.
John W. Pugh was educated in the
county school near his father's home
and in 1865 he was married to Frances
E. Thompson, a member of an early
pioneer family. Two children were
the result of this union who are Mrs.
Mary E. Caldwell, of Bend, and Geo.
B.. of Brownsville. Mrs. Pugh died in
1870 and some years later Mr. Pugh
married Nancy E. Walker, a daugh
ter of another pioneer family. Nine
children were born to this union who
are Mrs. Estclle Taylor, of Seattle,
Ernest G. of Shedd, Mrs. Nellie J.
Satchwell, of Portland. Charles A., of
Shedd, Mrs. Laura Malson, of Shedd,
Harvey G of Shedd, Mrs. Edith J.
Ficklin, of Canada. Tohn McKinlev. of
Shedd and Effie, deceased. -In 1898
Mr. Pmrh was again left alone by the
death of his second wife.
The late Mr. Pugh was an energetic
worker for the commtininty in which
he lived and an active member of the
Methodist church. For 25 years he
served as superintendent of the Sun
day school. He was one of the
county's prominent graneers and was
a member of the Woodmen of the
World. For four vears nrinr to 180i
he served the county faithfully and ef
ficiently as a county commissioner.
He was held in high esteem by a host
of friends throughout the county and
was perhaps one of the best known
residents. His family is ranled amnnir
the most estcemablc- families of Ore
gon. Funeral services will he held to
morrow aftprnoon at 2 o'clock at
Shedd with interment in the cemetery
at that place.

Case Concerning San Jose
Couple.
Believing that his alleged wife,
whom it is understood has been here
visiting for several days, has been un
true to him, a man by the name of
Jensen arrived in the city Sunday and
conducted a quiet investigation hero
and in Corvallis, in an effort to sub
stantiate his belief that his supposed
wayward spouse has been living with
a map by the name of Savage.
I'eculiar circumstances involve the
-rase, in that Jensen avows that the
woman is his wile but asserted that
he was of the opinion that she had
married Savage. He said that she had
continually written to him at their
home in San Jose, Calif., for money
which he had supplied her with since
she has been here.
At Corvallis he got track of the
woman and secured a warrant for her
arrest but before the arrival oi offi
cers, she had flown. Local police who
have conducted an investigation of the
case are of the opinion that the wo
man is not Jensen's wife but that she
has been living with him and that he
became riled when he iound out that
he had been furnishing her with mon
ey, while she was living with another
ruan. Last night Jensen decided to
give up his investigation and left for
his home in San Jose.
