BUT 12 PER CENT ! OF ROADS PAVED Only 299,135 Out of 2.478, 552 Miles in U. S. are Improved Despite the foot that the United EUtm hat 7,000,000 motor driven ve hicles in operation leading the world in this resptct motorist will be sur prised to learn that but 12 per rent of roads in this country are surfaced. Out of an estimated total of 2.478,652 miles of public rural roads, only about 299,135 are surfaced or improved. Indiana shows the greatest per centage of improved highways, 42 5 oer cent of its roads being surfaced, based on the last available figures of 1918. That there is a great need for good roads can be deducted from the in creased tendency for long distance hauling by motor truck and particu larly by the fact that 60.000 employ ee of the United States Postoffice Department travel 1,400,000 miles daily in delivering mail on rural routes. With an estimated 1920 production of l,5ti0,000 automobiles, the need for better highways is evident That this fact is recognised by states and muni cipalities is shown by estimated ap propriations of $600,000,00 to be spent on hard-surfaced roads during the year. In 1918 approximately 11.944 miles of roads were improved in this country and the enormous sum of $34,974,000 was spent oil maintenance. More than 120.000.000 have been spent on the 3320 miles Lincoln Highway between the Hudson river and San Francisco ' in the last six years. To stimulate the interest of both public and states in the value of bet ter roads, The Goodyear Tire & Rub ber Company has created a new de partment to be devoted entirely to this work. It is in charge of C. M. Wood, who is exceptionally well qualified for the work. This department will gath er data on the cost of good roads, methods of taxation and other valu able information necessary before leg islatures can frame and pass good roads legislation. So great is the interest of F. A. Seiberling, president of the company and former head of the Lincoln High way Association, that the new Good Boads Bureau will have the aid of all Goodyear salesmen and much educa tional literature to help create public sentiment toward improvement of all roads in the United States. TINKERING WITH ' BATTERIES HELD BAD PRACTISE One of the bits of advice that strike the eye of every man who runs thru the numerous articles on motor care or who studies an instruction book is this "Don't tinker." Nearly all of them leave the reader in doubt as to Just where proper care leaves off and tinkering begins. .Webster says that the tinkerer is "one skilled in petty mechanical work" but that doesn t exactly fit the pres ent meaning. The trouble with most habitual tinkerers is that they aren't skilled at all. A man may be a lawyer or a doc tor or a real-estate agent but if he is a natural mechanic and knows why he grinds his valves and how to do it, and exactly how the pieces go to gether, he can surely grind valves without being accused of tinkering. So a thing that would be tinkering for one man is proper care for anotr-r. It is just about the same with bat- ANTI-FREEZE FORMULAS The mixtures given below are snfe for stationary engines or motorcars, and are not expen sive, Klllier denatured or wood alcohol may be lined with com mercial glycerin. The only safe rule is to put water in regularly to keep the solution at the proper level. and to keep connections tignt, out a side from that to let the battery en tirely alone. Squeaking Springs If in a hurry to stop a spring from squeaking, pour a little kerosene over it, guiding the oil down the sides with the finger so it will run in between the leaves. Wipe off the excess. Pour cylinder oil over the springs the same way. Now shake the car so the oil will be drawn in and find the squeak.
