THE LL'HKITATION OF RIFLES I
Always, Remember the Better Care'
You Take of Your Gun th i
Better It Will Shoot I
(By Captain W. H. Richard. Three j
time winner of the Leech Trophy). ,
When you pick up your little rifle
just remember that it haa been the
aubject of innumerable inspections and
of the greatest poaaible care to mukj
aure that it will give you its beat sir-!
vice.
Now then let's see. There are a
number of things that you can, and
are liable to do, that are not good for
your rifle and the greatest of these is
neglect. Neglect ruins more perfectly
good rifles than any other abuse. Of,
course, no fellow who thinks anything
of his rifle will drive nails with the
barrel or use it for a pry to lift i p
logs or stones or do anything else
that will batter or mar it. What we
are moat liable to do is to forget to
clean it when we are through usiing it
for the day.
Any rifle and especially the small
bore tif the .22 calibre must be kept
clean from dirt and ruit- There pir- i
al groves are put into the barrel to
make the bullet skim through the air
with a boring motion after it leave
the barrel causing it to fly straight
and true and to give greater penetra
tion at the target. Any damage to
these groves cause inaccurate flight
of the bullet. The cut-in portion is
termed the groove while the outstand
ing part are the Lands. The bullet
is (lightly larger than the bore and
when driven into the barrel by the
powder gases it wedges into the
groove forming a perfect gas check
insuring full and even force for the
powder charge. A rough r rusted
barrel causes lead to come off from
the bullet and leaves lead in the bar-

STARTLES THE ASSEMBLED MULTITUOe WITH Hi
SCNSATiONAL DROP JN A PARA CHVTC-
rel over which the next bullet ha to
fore it way.
If your rifle is clean to start with
you may shoot it aa much as you like
without cleaning as the powder foul
ing it toft and much of it is carried
out with the bullet of the next shot.
However, if you set your rifle away
for any length of time without clean
ing, this fouling become dry and
hardens on the steel after which it ia
almo.t impomole to remove it and
the barrel becomes pitted and rough.
If you wil Itake just a little time after
you are through using your rifle for
the day to clean and oil the inside of
the barrel it will always be ready for
use apain. Your rifle will latt for years
no matter how much you shoot it if
you will get into the habit of setting
it away clean and oiled. Never let it
go over-night uncleaned and if yon
are not to use it for several days, go
over it the second time after a day
or two.
Examine it occasionally to see that
the oil has not evaporated or run off
, the stei and better yet coat the bore
' with a heavy grease such a Win
chester Gun Grease, which will not
' evaporate. Where possible atwaya
clean from the breech end of the bar
rel a the condition of the extreme
muzzle end ha much to do with the
accuracy and care which should be
! used never to jam or dent it.
Just remember that a lot of other
' fellow took a lot of care in making
that rifle before you got it and that
if you will take only a little more
than half the care they did with it, it
will always be ready for a day's sport
when you are. If it does not shoot
accurately any more do a little priv
ate detective work to find out where
tt place the blame. Most every time
you will find that old man Neglect haa
been around. '
