Local Maccabees
Honored Saturday
Night By Corvallis
The local Maccabees of the city
were honored by a visit from the de
gree team of Corvallis Saturday night
which initiated a large class of new
members into the mysteries of the
order. The attendance was large and
a general social occasion enjoyed. The
crowning event of the evening was
perhaps the oyster supper which was
well supported by all sir knights in at
tend. The contest between the men
and the ladies of the order on a mem
bership campaign is now on and
something doing every minute is the
order of business.

Fis'iir-s presented today show that
during 1919 532 automobiles were
damaged or d'-siroyed by trains, one
half of which attempted to cross the
track in front of approaching trains,
while 137 ran into the side of trains.
Five riossing flagmen were run down
by approaching autos and 31 cross
. ing gates were run into. - -I
. In 1918 54 people were killed in
.automobile- train accidents and 173
were injured. In 1919 46 were killed
and 178 injured. Following is the sum
' mary for 1919: .
I Ran onto track in front of trains,
1 2(13; ran into side of trains, 137;
stalled engines on track, 73; skidded
I into side of train, 9; ran into crossing
gates, ai ; ran :nto crossing iingman,
6; miscellaneous, 14.
! Through the spread of' anti-arcioent
propaganda ihe nunlv-r of accidents
has been materially lin. red. eip'C
tally on the pirt of employes cf the
rail road romp. my, but there sc.ms
to be a growing carelessness on the
part of automobile drivers. The pub
lic is slow to listen to the dangers
of driving onto train tracks, say of
ficials, and more work Is yet to be
done along this line.
Speaking on the subject of Mixed
Marriage at St. .Mary's church last
night, Father I-ano said in part:
"These marriages ate not in favm
with the Catholic church, and I think
I may add without fear of mistnso
that they are nut in favor with any
Protastant denomination. This alti
tude implies neither animosity nor ill
feeling on the part of the f'athulic
church. The viewpoint !aVen ! both
sul-s, I think is the sam-!. and is per
fectly logical and correct -that such
alliances very frequently lead to re
ligious indifference, to a very imper
fect education of the children with a
net loss in the end to both churches.
"We are happy to say that there
are exceptions to this enndit'o:! and
every one knows them and recognises
that they are well charactrrixed by
unusual religious sincerity an. I stead
fastness. It is only fair however to
say that any one who is about to 'ake
a Catholic as a life rompanion, should
know a little something about tie
Catholic belief and practise, lest he
awake some day to And that ho is up
against a very distasteful situation.
"The church in a spirit of fair play
and justice requires that the non
Catholic youth take a brief course of'
instructions on these points two weeks
liefore the marriage. The question of
Joining the Catholic church is another
thing altogether, and this is and must
lie left to every one's own conscience "
