There is a persistent rumor about
the rity that the S. P. car shops at
Brooklyn, ne.ir Portland will be mov
ed to Albany ill the near future. No

It is known that more shop room
is needed on the S. P. lines between
Portland and Ashland, but it is hard
ly probably that the Brooklyn shops
would be disturbed to increase facil
ities here. They are siid to be need
ed to take care of the work out of
Portland.
What is more likely is the supposi
tion that the local ear shops and yards
will be greatly enlarged. Should this
br done it would mean the addition of
about 150 skilled workmen and their
f .milie to Albany and would provide
a greatly increased payroll all along
the line.
The company has a large amount of
land lying adjacent to the station and
the present shops .ind more could be
secured to muke room for the enlarge
ments. It would mean the increasing
of the importance that Albany al
ready maintains as a railroad center.
About five years ago a survey was
made for such a purpose, but during
the war nothing more was said about
it and it is not known just what stage
such a proceeding occupies at the pres
ent time. Since officials of the com
pany will give out nothing, perhaps
events of the near future will throw
some light on the intentions of the
railroad.
