Most of these recruits, t,oo, are said to be former service
men. This fact itself seems sufficient refutation of charges
that the troops in general suffered undue humiliation or
hardship during the war. If they like the service well
enough to return to it of their own free will, in preference
to taking easily obtainable jobs at high wages in private
life, the American army at its worst must be pretty tolerable.

Reasons Threadbare
Senator W. W. Banks of Portland
is a fair sample of the sentimental
ailvocat.. of non-punishment for
crome. He made a strong fight against
the restoration of capital punishment
during the special session of the leg
islature, and the reasons he gave were
old and threadbare, says the Eugene
Guard. The squeamish fear of occa
sionally punishing an innocent person
was the burden of his plea, but there
was no expression of sympathy for the:
innocent man or woman who becomes:
the victim of the unpunished criminal.

The army, as everybody knows, is now recruited en

last eight months, without any special effort, more than 150,

supply all necessary demands, and no doubt is now enter
