ALBANY, OREGON, MONDAY. JANUARY 19
NOW FOR A LIVE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The Chamber of Commerce Meeting Friday night gave
evidence of some existing tife in the organization and that
spark should be nourished and fanned until the entire city
and countryside is alive to the possibilities of this very nec
essary body,
Albany is woefully lagging in the matter of its Cham
ber of Commerce. It is true that an efficient secretary is
employed who looks after what details of business that vol
untarily come in. But as far as a real, live "go-get'em" or
ganization is concerned, we have to admit that we are hope
lessly outclassed by Salem, Eugene and some other Oregon
cities.
There is much important work to be done. There is a
world of immigration coming west. Albany should be up
on her toes and looking for the newcomer who wants to set
tle on our small tracts, to work in our mills and factories or
engage in business enterprises.
Our cannery and small fruit industry offers opportun
ity tor thousands ot new people., with this nucleus we
should build solidly around it. In this week's issue of the
Saturday Evening Post you will see three advertisements
occupying nearly two full pages advertising the Wittenburg
KingCo., of Salem and Portland; the Phez jams and jellies
made at Salem, andPaul's Jams, made by the Puyallup &
Sumner Growers Association of Puyalluo. Wash., and Al
bany, Ore. In this month's Vanity Fair is an advertisement
for Phez "Appleju." A score of other Oregon industries,
such as the Oregon City Woolen Mills and spending hund
reds of thousands of dollars in national advertising, and this
not only results in immediate profit to the manufacturers,
but it directs attention to the state at large.
Mr. W. R. Scott's suggestion for an Albany calendar
for 1921 Is a sensible suggestion. Thousands of dollars are
spent annually for expensive calendars which do not do the
merchants a corresponding amount of good. The right
kind of calendar would hot only be an expense saver for the
business men, but it would serve as an educational subject
for the residents of the city. There is a lot about our home
town that most people do not know. Let them keep remind
ed on some phase of it every month. .

The Democrat under the present management is just a
vear old. We are not ashamed of the record we have made
this year and we are proud to know that so 'many of our fel-j
low-townsmen share our pride with us. The Democrat wasj
established in 1865 and has had an honorable record for;
more than half a century.

THAT CENSUS ENUMERATION
We nearly went to sleep on the ce'nsus iob and left the
entrie matter to a few paid hands which Uncle Sam employ-
y eu to count us. L.asr weeK tne Democrat called attention to
.. this lethergy and the City CouncH got busy, authorized the
. insertion of a couple of ads in the papers, gave the city re
corder authority to receive reports and then stopped. Fri
day evening the Chamber of Commerce took some action,
but there is not the help yet in sight to insure a good, full
count. It is known that there are scores of people who have

did work being done by Kansas City. The public is ready
for our message: Let's shoot.
It is not necessary to employ a high priced secretary or
manager, although a good, live man to stir things up would
be an asset. But much good can be done through publicity
and there are several good agences handling national adver
tising from their offices in Portland who could conduct our
" campaign with success. . . -
But outside of the matter of letting the world know
about this wonderful country there are scores of things
which the Chamber of Commerce can accomplish. More
united effort; a more willing attitude on the part of the busi
ness and professional men and farmers and closer coopera
tion are necessary. Let's all knuckle down, get our toes on
the scratch at the annual meeting and banquet which will be
held on February sixth, and get away on a flying start and
make 1920 the best year Albany has ever enjoyed.

AN INDUSTRIAL SURVEY
One of the best things the Chambe4 of Commerce has
done for some tme is the authorization of an industrial sur
vey for the city and county. An accurate count of all of the
Industries of the county would be a valuable asset. There
is more'manufacturing going on in Lfnn County than most
people realize. It would really be worth whlle4o employ
some competent person and send hkn into every nook and
