A GREAT EXPERIMENT
There's something In my breast mist
aing,
A nightengale all wild of note,
A wondrous something sweet of
throat,
A harp of heavenly tone and string.
Though storm and tempest loud assail,
And fence my way with frowning
rack,
As if to crush me, turn me back
With icy fist and sheeted hail;
Though deserts ashy, drear and dread
Lie in the way my feet must take,
Without a spring my thrist to slake
And burning suns best on my head;
Still must I sing, though mournfully
The pensive numbers come and go.
The wistful measures form and flow,
The echoing, cosmic grief of me.

down to their pay. , '
The only criticism they incur concerns the method by
which they aim to do this. Even that criticism is friendly.
It is recognized that, whether they succeed or fail, the re
sults of the experiment will make s useful and valuable
lesson.
There is nothing new in organizing consumers that
is, forming co-operative associations to buy commodities at
a lower price, ft has been done widely in England, and to
some extent in this country. It should work pretty well in
the matter of food, if the railroad men are able to enlist the
co-operation of the organized farmers, as they appear to
be doing. The profits of middlemen and speculators will
be squeezed out ' .
The brotherhoods, however, plan also to do consider
able producing and selling themselves. That is a new busi
ness tor them, and a large undertaking. One branch of their
organization has already got hold of some knitting and un

Pork Barrel Methods
If the government owned the rail
reads, it would provide somrmoney
for extentions as it has provided
money for riven and harbors in the
past by the porkbarrel method.
The stales which could mutter the
molt votes in ConKresi would get the
most pork, although those which have
the fewest votes are in greatest need
of railroad. Oregon, with its three
votes in the house, would Hive small
chance against slates which have
twenty, thirty or fourty votes. Gov
ernment ownership would afford little
prospect that the Natron cut-off or
the Stnihom roads would be built or
that other new roads would open up
the great vacant spaces of eastrn

WHY TEMPT THE BURGLAR?
The chief of police of the little city was making his an
nual report to the mayor. Among other things he said: "I
wish, I might draw the attention of citizens to the necessity
of finding a more secure place than out-of-the-way places for
leaving liberty bonds and other valuables when they are
absent from home. We had one burglary job alone where
there were $3,600 worth of liberty bonds stolen this year."
There is no use trying to deceive the burglar by putting
the bonds under the mattress or in the piano. He knows
all about the cracked teapot and the old trunk and the sewing-basket
and the corner of the library rug. That is his job.
He knows more "cut-of-the-way places" than any honest
citizen does.
Moreover, at the nice little stone bank, fireproof and
burglar-proof and supported with the strong stockholders'
liability laws, the family who lost $3,600 by theft could have
kept the liberty bonds and insurance papers and everything
else safe for about $Z a year.
