Methodists Enjoy Fine Meet. E. L. Getz and A. R. Grout of
ing; Dr. Parkensen
Is Speaker
Ths business mcii's Bublc Class of
the Methodist church and invited
friends enjoyed complimentary ban
quet and a fine program in the din
ning room parlor of the church lut
night, beginning at six o'clock, giv
en by the ladies of the church Mil
ted by Mm. Humphreys who is in the
city representing the use of Oregon
manufactured products. Rev. J. C
Spencer, pastor of the church acted
as chairman of the occasion, and set
forth tha pufpose of the meeting and
made all feel at home.
Mrs. Humphreys was first intro
duced and nvde a strong talk on be
half of home manufacturers and urg
ed tha bona wives to-feuy articles of
food as are prduced in Oregon. Sac
stated that the housewife did 83 per
cent of the buying for the home But
made no statement regarding who did
I the paying. In addition to what the
Indies of the church furnished, Mrs.
Humphreys served hot buiacuits, mad
out of Crown hard wheat flour, manu
factured by an Oregon company, jel
' lies and jams by Wadhams and Kerr
i of Portland, Catsups, by Knight
, Packing company, of Medford, Short
' nings in cooking by Swift and com
1 pany of Portland, and oleomargarine
. as a substitute for butter made by a
Portland firm.
Mrs. Humphreys made many valu
able suggestions in the interest of the
Oregon manufactjrer and consumer
and in all cases makes the appeal
that the manufactured article of the
home town should have first consid
eration. The next number of the list was a
selection by the Methodt Male i,-t-tette
which was well received.
Dr. G. H. Parkensen, pastor of il.a
Methodist church of Corvallis n.a.j
the talk of the evening which, without
doubt inspired every man present
He extracted as a text from tl.e
16 verse of the 72nd chapter ot the
psalms these words: "Unlihe'.y
Places", and around this thought the
speaker gave numerous examples of
distinguished men and women from
"unliKely places" who have been fac
tors in the world's greatest develop
ment in all tins of human progress.
The speaker cited to the humble be
ginning of Mrs. Burton, the great
foreign missionary; the story of the
birth, of Lincoln in a log hut over
which stands a marble palace today. '
the l.fe of Kf son, the wizzard of el
ctricty, who was a man from an
"Unlikely Place".
"The speaker also drove nome the
fact that out of the "Unlekery Places"
in the mental moral and physical
qualities of men come the greatest
development. In the army the pyc :o
logist classed men for what they were
best fitted. The hearer was led to
cosider what he is test fitted to !u
in the world and also to make op
portunity where there is none in sight
The last appeal of the speaker was
that all should be wiling to make
sacrifice for heroism. Out of the-i
homes of the people must come the
great men of earth, he said.
