Jane, who haa worked In one pnrtle

one of the great New Vork hotel sine
the day It was opened. Is the best
waitress that ever art down d!h

the discriminating. Her deftness, her
quiet manners, her promptness shove
all her unfailing politeness stamp her
s one apart from the sisterhood. She
waa serene and composed while she
dealt with one of those peckish, snap
py men who had dropped In nnder tlx
Impression that because one slta on a

It Isn't lie was a little ashamed to
fuss about the prices, so he fussed
about everything else. Rut at last he
departed, and serene Jane permitted
herself a weary smile.
'Ton have to get along with all
kinds, don't you?" remarked a patron.
"Indeed, yea." said Jane. "1 served
ghost yesterday morning."
"An old gentleman came In qntte
early, for breakfast. lie waa beauti
fully dressed; t think he was one of
the hotel guests; at least l.e came In
that entrance, lie chose a stool and
when somebody tried to sit beside him.

turned to the vacant stool and asked."
What would yoo like, my dear?"
"He paused aa If for an answer. Ap
parently be heard one. for he said to
me with a smile, as If amused at the
notion, 'A "piece of pie and cup of
wreak coffee with milk and some rolls.'
"There wasn't any pie at that hour
and so he ordered sliced peaches. I
brought all the things and arranged
them as If for two. By that time peo
ple were moving awav from him. He
buttered the rolls at the vacant place
before he ate a bite himself. Then
he made bla own breakfast. I thought
there might be a scene about the two
checks, but no. He added them op
load and correctly; counted out the
change In his band ; left a tip In front
of each plate and then asked for a
paper sack. In It be put an unbroken
roll. Then he paid the cashier and
vent out. They found the paper bag
with the roll In It outside on the
tens."
"Could yon make out whether he
thought he was talking to a man or
woman?" asked the patron.
"I thought It was a little child," said
Jane softly. "He always looked down
when he spoke to It. and be buttered
the rolls, and the pie order for break
fast was childish, too I thought." and
Jane's eyes seemed a little misty. "I
. thought maybe be bad lost a favorite
grandchild."
Bananaa Make Berlin Glad.
Aa I was passing down the Freil

people which suddenly collected In
front of adellcatessen shop.
It was only with difficulty that one

and admiration, and on looking a lit

was a novelty to the Kerllners, who
for nearly Qve years have seen not a
trace of fruit, once so plentiful In the
capital.
: The smiling faces and little Jokes
made It quite evident thnt the banana
was recognized as a symbol of pesce,
and that the delight felt at Its pres

"PERFECT" MAN GETS ROAST
London Writer Refuses to Invy Wom
en Who Are "Blessed" With
Such a Life Companion.
Every one envied a certain lady be
cause It waa apparent thai she had
such a perfect busbnnd.
True enough, the gentleman neither
drank, swore, looked at other women,
grumbled, nor did be spend any time
away from bla wife except when at
business.
Vet the woman who "possessed" Ihla
model of perfection found him a most
Irritating companion with whom she
was forced 10 spend her life, says Lou
don Answers, l or Instance. If she got
worn out trying to pacify baby, who
was cross, and eventually lost, her tem
per with the'ehttd. her husband would
come In. take the little one In bla arm
and amiably try and often succeed,
aa a fresh person sometimes does to
work the oracle with calmness.
That would be all very well If he
didn't put on the "See how much bet
ter my method la" air, which la moat
tantalising.'
Perfect men are so anxious to olj
trude their perfection upon their wom
enfolk that they often defeat their own
ends. Tbey spend money on seats for
the opera or buying little presents with
no knowledge of whether auch will be
tbe most acceptabls or desirable gifts.
It Is because these men are so good
In Intentions that their wivea haven't
the heart to say, "I'd rather have bad
S shillings for a new box Iron. It would
save me such a lot of trouble."
The husband who haa a few glaring
fanlta la pretty sure-to look over bis
wife's fallings and humor her whims.
The perfect man has a horrible knack
of preaching at bla womenfolk.
The woman with a faultless husbnnd
often feels like doing annicthing to
make him awear at her. Perfection la
apt to become dull and monotonous.
Don't envy the woman with a per
fect husband, yon wlvea who wish
your own men wouldn't drop cigarette
ash on the carpet or storm a bit when
things go wrong; for these careless,
"tern perish men have a lot of good
qualitlea to balance their faults.
The man who never raises his voice
to complain rarely softens It to wife
with loving words of praise.
Shells Still Flying.
Residents of the devastaied districts
of France are still fleeing from bursts
of shell and shrapnel.
Tbe new menace Is caused by the
small grass and swamp fires, which
frequently set off the shells that have
been plied up to be hauled away and
exploded In some safe place.
M:iJ. II. C Greene of Boston had a
thrilling ride and narrowly escuped a
hall of shrapnel on his way from St.
Quentln to Luon as a result of one of
these fires. A French woman work
ing In a Held near Bouconvllle was
gassed and considerable damage haa
been done.
In the vast, desolate fields, thou
sands of unexplnded shells have been
picked up by German prisoners, and
though there are details hauling them
away and exploding them In remote
valleys every day, there nrc still long
ranks of them everywhere. 'Sparka
from locomotives and from small fires
where battlefield rubbish la being
burned occasionally set fire to pntcbea
of dry weeds, and the accidental
bursts are numerous.
Brazilian Church 100 Years Old.
Christ church of Rio de ' Janeiro,
which soon will celebrate Its cente
nary. Is said to have been the first
Protestant church to be built In South
America.
It waa erected to provide a place fit
worship for the English community.
Two restrictions were placed on the
church, the exterior was to resemble
a dwelling house and not a temple,
and no bells were allowed. Out of
this concession grew the religious
liberty which now exists In Brazil.
Today there are two Anglican dio
ceses and 40 churches In South Amer

; Good prices for the farmer's crops en

and greater prosperity.
But the success of agriculture depends
on the growth of railroads the modern
beasts of burden that haul the crops to the
world's markets. . -
The railroads like farms increase their
output and cut down unit costs by the
constant investment of new capital.
With fair prices for, the work they-do,
the railroads are able to attract new capi
tal for expanding their facilities.
, Rates high enough to yield a fair return
will insure railroad growth, and prevent
costly traffic congestion which invariably
results in poorer service at higher cost.
National wealth can increase only as
our railroads grow.
Poor railroad service is dear at any price.
No growing country can long pay the price
. of inadequate transportation facilities.
