From Providence C F. Sargent one of the leading farmers residing near Providence church in the forks of the Santiam transacted business at the court house today. Mr. Sargant reports 26 inches of snow at this place during the re cent storm. He states that big flock of quails housed under his barn and was wel carei for during the snow. Promt, well known farmer living on Route One, was in the city today for the first time fof a month. Mr. Pro pet reports 'that plenty of snow visited his section of the county, bat that no serious damage was done in that district by the snow and ice. Stock was all eared for and no losses were reported. . They were a week without mail until neighbors began bringing it out from Albany in relays. Legion Meetings Postponed There will be no more meetings of the American Legion onto January 7. The meeting called for tonight was postponed on account of 'the busy holi day season. TORTURE USED IS ACCUSATION Jap Officials Put Man in Pig Box, He Says, Investi gation Ordered KIOTO, Japan Charges of torture of accused persons who figure in a ponding bribery scandal whlerrln volves, among others, Jushira Kluchl, the former Governor of Kioto pre fecture, have' evoked much crlticUm throughourthe country. The casi centers around the charge that Mr. Kiucht bribed members of the pre fecture council in order to carry -ut certain administration projects. Although. the court report says. Kiuchi admitted bribery, he later uV nied this. Kiuchi testified that the public pros ecutor would not listen to truthful statement of the facta of the case, and exorted false testimony from him under threats. Other accused per sons, who were formerly high offici als of the Kioto perfecual govern ment, have deposed to the same effect - Another defendant declared that he was examined by a public procurat or day and night for nine months and that he was placed many times in a "pig box" because he refused to make the statements the v procurator de manded. The "pig box" is a small dis ciplinary contrivance which is just large enough to contain a human per son, sitting down. The accused said: "I became very ill, but was exam ined regardless of my condition. This was nothing more than torture. Fin ally,, aa they threatened to keep me in the "box" until I confessed I said I had accepted a bribe, which is not true." An investigation has been started. .
