By PETER P. CARNEY. ....
Possibly you never before heard
of Clarksdale, f"''. There it nothing
strange about ; there are a lot
of place we t.-.-v have heard of,
and quite a number that we never ex
pect to hear about. But yon and I
and a lot of people are frolntr to hear
a lot about Clarktdafa during the next
few months, and possibly for land
er time.
They are going) to hold a trapshcol
lug tournament in GarkxU'r next
May that will be a FE.Al. shoot. Re
member this for we aro tv'ling you
some inside "dope" several months
in advance. This shoot will take
place on May 1142 and 13. The
1 ournament will be the Mississippi
State championship affair with one
or two embellishments to' (rive ii a
National tone. - . -
Some time ao we turned out a
"story entitled "Who has the best tram
of Professional Shooiers?" This is
something the Mississippi people
would like to know, too. They are
interested in the question to sues a.i
extent that S. L. Doods, one of the
wealthiest men in the Delta, who is
managing the shoot has invited the
Winchester, Ithaca, Remington, du
Pont, Hercules, Western, and other
companies maintaining professional
shooters to send their teams and set'
tie this much mooted question. Dodds
will offer attractive trophies for such
an event
It is hoped that the ammunition
companies will accept the invitation
It the Mississippi shoi-. Such an
e'tnt would be tt rnl headlim-r and
wauld bring tog-i he thi best shoot
ers in the world at" competitors with
something at 'stake. Not one of the
shooters would have a desire to be
on any but the winning team and it
would be a good wager that the ma
jority of the scores would be perfect
Such men as Fred Gilbert, who re
cently made runs of 591 and 614;
Lester German, who has broken 647
out of 650 in succession; Mrs. Top
perwein; Charley Spencer, Mowell
Hawkins, John Taylor, Homer Clark
Ruth Rasce, George Maxwell, Bill
Crosby, and some others that we
cant bring to mind at the writing.
It is the intention of the Clarks
dale Club to give $5,000 in trophies.
Two banks in Clarksdale have each
given 1500. That makes a nice start.
One of these $500 checks has a string
tied to it that is good for the sport.
The note with the check said that the
money should go to the 50 shooters
making the lowest scores. This is a
mighty fine thing because Mr. Doods
informs us that he expects to have at
least 200 people shooting in this tour
nament who never before handled a
gun. The Clarksdale program will be
ready for distribution about the time
I of the Pinrhurst shoot in January.

Geese and Ducks

The following article appears in

Reeidenta of th CoUt valley and
