Enforcement of constitutional prohi
bition will be placed squarely up to
stale and municipal authorities. Fed
eral government machinery will not
intervene unless inefficiency on the
part of local officials make such ac
tion necessary.
John F. Gramer, federal prohibition
commissioner, told the temperance
board of tha Methodist Episcopal
church today that the problem would
be left to local authorities. It was
Kramer's first announcement of pol

The amount of money to be raised
in tha various taxable units of the
county which i required by law to be
reported to the county assessor and
county clerk on or before Dec. 1st is
being received.
Under the present law a city, school
district or, road district voting a tax
are required to report the amount of
money desired and the assessor makes
tho rate and extends the amount on
the tax mil. The city of Lebanon re
port $18,400 to be raised on an as
sessment next year of 1869,235. Scio
reports $1400 to be raised on an as
sessment of $1164)73. ,

PORTLAND, Nov. 26 A P Indict
ments charging murder in the second
degree were returned by the Mult
nomah grand Jury today against
David Smith, James Ogle and Walter
Banaater, alleged confessed principals
in the robbery of the CUremont Tav
ern and the murder Friday night of
J. N. Burgess and Geo. Perringer,
prominent Eastern Oregon stockmen.
The case is believed by the district
attorney' office to have been handled
thus far more expeditiously than any
similar case in recent years.
The coroner's Jury last night recom
mended that the ' men be held or
murder. It also recommended re-en
actment of the death penalty law in
the atate.

frorn the public fund about f 15 per
each person enumerated.

son of school age be enumerated aa it
means a lots to the district of at least
f 15 for each on omitted. Any one
who has been omitted is requested to
phone 446-R or 629-R and the enum
erator will call as directed. All new
people of the city come under thia
class who have recently located here.
The number of children of school
aga in the district is much larger than
it has been in many year and a -com
plete report will be made by the clerk
in a few days.
