RED REVOLUTION
Deliberately and with malice aforethought the organiz
ed radicals of Centralia vicinity shot down four men promin
ent among the forces that won the war for America. A fren
zied crowd of soldiers and citizens, outraged and indignant,
hanged one murderer and was sorely tempted to hang them
alL
What shall we say of mob law in America? It is usual
to condemn it. We cannot apologizfe for it. But what shall
we say of that black crime which provoked the gala crowds,
gathered -peaceably to celebrate an anniversary of interna
tional gladness?
What shall we do with our radicals? Shall "we tolerate
them as has been done until they outrage our best-loved men,
widow our women who sent their husbands overseas? Shall
we harbor and shelter these slope-browed ranters and depend
upon the common laws and the ordinary criminal machinery
to punish them after their mischief is done?
They defy tolerance. Time and time again their revolt
ing, unannounced ruthlessness has proven it.' They have
forfeited all rights. They have burned the bridges of com
mon decency and fair play which society extends to the
criminal. They have branded themselves as bereft of human
instinct. . , -
.The common criminal code was not framed for such
depravity. Unusual laws, unusual stringency must be
brought into play, else society will go unprotected to other
outrages, other cold massacres over which mothers and wives
will weep, over which men will curse and uncoil the grim,
unlawful rope.

ren, allow within her household these adopted beasts. ,

THANKSGIVING AND PEACE
After many tentative announcements and postpone
ments, the representatives of the Allies at Paris have allowed
it to become known that they expect to put the peace treaty
into effect on November 28. The machinery is already in
their hands; under the provisions of the treaty it can be
declared operative, including the League of Nations, upon
ratification by three of the five great powers, and it has been
ratified now by all but the United States. -
The Allies have been waiting for this country. They
are doubtless convinced now that Amercan ratification will
come in time to enable America to join them as a charter
member of the League, not later than the date mentioned.
Recent news from the .United States Senate confirms this
" impression. There is an evident desire there to wind up the
debate, adopt a set of compromise reservations and finish
the job. There may be a final vote within two weeks.
There is one idea that will instantly occur to millions
of Americans in this connection. Nov. 27 is Thanksgiving
Day. The official proclamation has just been issued. The
nation is looking forward to a real celebration of peace

restored, as one oi tne cniet blessings enjoyed by this fortun
ate land. It would be peculiarly appropriate if the treatv
could be made operative, and world peace be proclaimed, on
wovemDer z.
Our Thanksgiving Day 'would then become, as it de
serves to De, a aay ot world-thanksgiving. The matter
could doubtless be arranged easily if the Senate would give
it favorable consideration.
TRUE RADICALISM
unrest is conservatism, the one dancer radicalism. Prohi
bition is a radical movement, and deserves the same con
demnation that all radicalism deserves. A conservative is
not a wet and he is not a dry there is a middle ground be
tween the two." He urged his hearers to "vote against every
radical measure both in the moral order and in the economic
order and keep on voting'no' until a conservative program,
in keeping with the principles of Christian ethics and In har
mony with the sacred tenets of the American constitution,
is established in this country."
It Is a beautiful dream that we could keep on voting
on some mythical conservative middle ground, marking
time while the world procession goes on, until somehow, in
some magical conservative way, we arrive at that program
in harmony with Christian ethics and the American, consti
tution. But it is hardly practical. It is well to remind our
selves over and over again that what we face is conditions,
and not theories.
Moreover, there is much misuse of the word "radical."
Radical means going to the roots of things. Most of the
real radicals of the world have done this. Socrates did this,
and Jesus did it, and the founders of our republic. The
trouble with much of the so-called radicalism of today is that
it is not radical enough. It is superficial and false, and does
not offer fundamental remedies.
Hurling anathemas at capital may seem radical in com
parison with the days when capital was sole tyrant. But it
goes only half the way. The true radicalism goes clear
down beneath the foliage and trunk of capital and labor to
the common root in humanity. It sees that capitalists and
laborers are both people that they are mutually dependent
and.it asails wrong on either side. .
