wronged. Not that era are partic
ularly proud of road conditions in
Linn Gouty at tha present time, but,
generally speaking they are aa good
aa tha average to be found anyplace.
Go to Lebanon on either the San
tiam road or out by the Hinshaw and
Whit Crawford places and a fairly de
cent niece of road is encountered. Go
on np through Lebanon to Sweet
Home and Foster. The road is still
passing fair. Take a trip up the east
side of the Willamette river to Har
risburg. It is a f!ss stretch, partic
ularly from the turn a mile southeast
of Corvallis. And there are other
roads in the county that are fit to
McKnight, or Commission re J. D.
Irvine and T. J. Butler, but an apprec
iation of the difficulties that thy had
to face. v
The Democrat did not agree with
the court in the matter of a future
road policy.- for it believed that even
tha beat roads that could be built in
tha old way would not stand up un
der tha increasing automobile and
truck travel. Nor did it agree with
Judge Mcknight in the manner of
raising funds for road construction.
The method of paying as we go by
taxation would take a long time to
get any place.
But J idge McKnight honestlr be
lieves that tha loading of so large a
debt upon tha people ia a dangerous
practise. In advocating his view he
was unmercifully flayed by those
most strongly opposing him and in
soma quarters there was very little
regard for the truth.
But whether or not we agree with
Judge McKnight, many of his oppon
ents will have to admit that tha pld
court mighty well, held taxea down w
a minimum and kept the two thousand
or more miles of roads in fairly good
shape considering the amount of funds
on hand.
The new court is a progressiva set of
men, and endowed with appropriat
ion with which to make a beginning,
Linn County may look forward to a
more rapid realisation of her hopes
for smooth roads all over tha vast
area it covers. Local bonds, regular
and special taxes, state bonds and
taxea and federal funds are going to
make a mighty difference in the next
few years.
and should not be resorted to with-
out the very beat kind of a reason.
The local railway workers are a le
vel headed body of men, with a mini
mum or tile fanatical foreign element
mixed in with it, men who have an
appreciation for American in stitu
tions and justice and can be counted
upon to trust the satisfactory solu

Oregon are proving themselves to be

simply because soma inter-urban train
men operating around Los Angeles
were dissatisfied, and. having rained
the ear of some brotherhood men, in
duced the rail road workers in that
VKinity to strike in sympathy with
them. They in turn won the sym
pathy, for a time, of the San Franci
sco and Oakland workers and traffic
in California, Nevada and Arizona
was tied up tight for a few hours.
A rail road strike is a serious n re
position when it is considered that
many communities are wbollv der-
endent upon the railroads for food.
