It sums up rather neatly the pres
ent discrepancy between the pay of
educators and the pay of those engag
ed in occupations which can hardly,
by the utmost stretch of imagination
becalled intellectual.
It is merely a picturesque version
of a situation -now becoming familiar
everywhere, in which muscular work
is better paid than mental work.
It might not do to declare, off-hand
that this is altogether wrong. It may
be that muscle deserves as much aa
brain for a day's work, as Edward
Bellamy maintained or even that mus
cle deserves more than brain, as the
Bolshevists now maintain.
Maybe thought ia out worth more
than manual labor, unices it be the
thought of the foreman who bosses
the labor. Maybe, too, the personal,
cultural satisfactions of the man of
trained mind are so much a rwtrard
in themse'.oee that sich an individ
ual deserves to be penalised, so to
speak, by being paid loss than the
laborer.
But such reasoning, like the situa
tion on which it ia based, turns the
old standards topsy-turvy.
