A Billion In Stamps
- The postoffice department has sold
so far about $1,000,000,000 in War
Savings Stamps. Thus the humble
26-cent thrift stamp has furnished a-
- bout one dollar out of every 30 devot
ted to the war. Or, taking the ac
tual cost of the war to the United
States, without counting the loans
made to alied countries, the thrift
stamp has provided about one dollar
out of 20. .
It is a new thing, too, hardly stare
ed aa yet. Millions have not formed
the habit. With millions more it is
a trifle and an after thought. What
power there may be in that device
hereafter, as an incentive to popular
thrift aa the means of financing
great national enterprises.
The Swiss are paying $36 a ton
for American coal. Hut don tell
your coal man that. Ho doeent need
sny encouragement to raise prices.
