No one who ha much familiarity
with young America can doubt the
need of auch a course. Our boy and
girla as a rule are aadly lacking In
the finer act of courtesy. But young
America is not to blame old Amer
ica ia the guilty party.
We live in a hurried, ambitious age.
We are all so much in a rush that
we forget George Washington' fam
ous maxim, "Life i always long
enough for courtesy."
No child who aee ill-mannered be
havior on the part of hit parent is
going to be well mannered himself,
unless he learns it in school. No
child who hears bad language or
cruel, cutting speech at home is go

lows. No child who aee disrespect
and thoughtlessness shown to the ag
ed ia going to rise to his feet when
those older than himself are stand

tak, up the matter of manners, to
interest and encourage the pupils in
th, daily practice of those courtesies
which alone make life endurable, but
if tho ham. falls short, it will be a
difficult matter for the achool to sup
ply the lack entirely.
As a social and business asset,
good manner ar, better than gold.

The government ia starting a thrift
campaign "to teach the American
people the value of a dollar." This
is glad news. It's the first sign for
some time to most of us that a dollar
has any value at all.
Talk about demobilixing an army!

SELK DETERMINATION FOR
GERMANS
The Germans are strong for plebis
cites now, when it ia question of
losing German territory. But in not
one case at issue did Germany ever
give the native any choice in the
matter when she grabbed the terri
tory now being restored to it own

a plebiscite in the case of Schleswig,
vticb. she wrested from Denmark
after an unprovoked and shameless
war against her little neighbor in
1S66. But she never kept her prom

nowadays who went into
the army slender, stoopshould

140 and 150 pounds: and they
came out straight, strong, broad
